Police Open Fire as Mob Attempts to Free ATM Robbery Suspect in Haryana’s Nuh; One Youth Injured

A dramatic confrontation unfolded in Haryana’s Nuh district on Tuesday evening when personnel of the Meghalaya Police allegedly fired in self-defence after being attacked by a group of nearly 30 individuals who attempted to rescue an inter-state ATM robbery suspect from police custody.

During the incident, a local youth sustained a gunshot injury to his leg, police officials said.

Following a complaint lodged by a Meghalaya Police officer, the Nuh police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against 12 identified persons along with several unknown individuals under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The charges include obstructing government officials from performing their duties, assaulting police personnel, and attempting to seize official firearms.

Police officials said the confrontation took place when a team from the Meghalaya Police was transporting the arrested suspect, Rahul Khan, a resident of Wazidpur village, after producing him before a court in Punhana to obtain transit remand. The accused was being taken back in a police vehicle when the incident occurred.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Nuh) Ayush Yadav stated that as the vehicle approached a roadside hotel near Sikrawa village, the accused suddenly demanded that the vehicle be stopped.

According to the officer, Rahul Khan abruptly grabbed the steering wheel of the vehicle in an attempt to overturn it and escape from police custody.

Soon after the commotion inside the vehicle, a crowd reportedly gathered at the spot and surrounded the police team. Officials said the group, which included several women, allegedly began attacking the officers, tried to snatch the keys of the police vehicle, and attempted to grab the weapons carried by the police personnel.

As tensions escalated and the situation began to spiral out of control, the Meghalaya Police officers reportedly opened fire in self-defence to protect themselves and ensure the suspect remained in custody.

During the gunfire, a resident of Sikrawa village, identified as Tarif Kha,n suffered a bullet injury to his leg. Authorities confirmed that he was immediately shifted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

Rahul Khan had been apprehended on Sunday during a joint operation conducted by the Nuh Police in coordination with the Meghalaya Police.

Investigators revealed that Khan is believed to be the mastermind behind a major ATM theft in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district that took place in February.

In that incident, criminals reportedly used specialised tools to cut open an automated teller machine and escaped with a large sum of cash.

Police records indicate that Rahul Khan is a repeat offender with a history of involvement in organised criminal activities.

He is wanted in several cases across different states, including cases registered at police stations in Delhi’s Dwarka and Dabri areas as well as investigations conducted by the Special Cell of the Meghalaya Police.

Authorities also suspect his involvement in multiple ATM theft operations carried out across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Following the violent confrontation in Nuh, forensic experts were deployed to examine the site of the incident. Officials confirmed that evidence from the location has been collected as part of the ongoing investigation.

Additional SP Ayush Yadav said that law enforcement agencies are reviewing video recordings of the incident to identify all individuals involved in the attack on the police team. Several specialised teams have been formed to track down and arrest the suspects.

He also cautioned members of the public against circulating unverified information or rumours about the incident on social media platforms, warning that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found spreading misleading or inflammatory content.

The episode has highlighted the challenges faced by police personnel while transporting high-profile criminal suspects and the growing concern over mob interference in law enforcement operations.
