In a significant development in the high-profile Umesh Pal murder case, a Prayagraj court on Thursday rejected the bail application of Mohammed Umar, the eldest son of slain mafia don Atiq Ahmed.

Umar had sought bail, claiming he was in Lucknow jail at the time of the murder and was therefore falsely implicated in the crime.

The case pertains to the brutal murder of Umesh Pal, a local figure, and his two police security guards, Sandeep Nishad and Raghvendra Singh, who were shot dead outside Pal’s residence in the Dhoomanganj police station area of Prayagraj on February 24, 2023.

Court Proceedings and Investigation Details

The bail plea was heard by the special judges under the SC/ST Act, Ram Pratap Singh Rana, who dismissed Umar’s application.

While Umar maintained that he had no involvement in the murder, the prosecution, represented by the counsel for complainant Jaya Pal, opposed the plea, citing sufficient evidence indicating Umar’s role in the conspiracy to eliminate Umesh Pal.

The investigation officer’s report further highlighted that Umar has a long criminal record, with twelve registered cases under his name. He is a known history-sheeter of the Kuldabad police station in Prayagraj.

The report emphasized that releasing Umar on bail could potentially enable him to commit fresh offenses, underlining the seriousness of the crime.

Background of the Case

The murder case initially involved Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf, both sons, and several aides.

On a complaint lodged by Jaya Pal, a criminal case was registered against Atiq, Ashraf, Umar, another son, Asad Ahmed, aides Guddu Muslim and Gulam, and nine others.

The case has witnessed multiple twists over the years:

  • Asad Ahmed, another son of Atiq, was killed in a police encounter.
  • Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead on April 15, 2025, while being taken to Colvin Hospital in police custody for a routine medical check-up.
  • Two other accused, Shaista Parveen (Atiq’s wife) and Guddu Muslim, remain absconding.

Given this backdrop of organized crime and ongoing investigations, the court determined that bail would not be appropriate, citing the gravity of the offense and the potential threat to law and order.

The Umesh Pal murder case continues to draw public and media attention due to the involvement of high-profile gangsters, the police’s encounter operations, and the ongoing hunt for the absconding accused.
