Prayagraj Metro Project Revived as Experts Inspect Depot Land; Final Pillar Work Begins on Six-Lane Ganga Bridge
Prayagraj: Efforts to introduce metro rail services in the Sangam city have resumed once again.
Representatives of UPMRC (Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation) and RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Service) visited Prayagraj on Monday to review the proposed project and held a meeting with Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) Vice-Chairman Rishiraj.
After the discussion at Indira Bhawan, the UPMRC and RITES officials, accompanied by PDA Assistant Engineer Priyanka Ojha, inspected land parcels in the Naini area for the proposed metro rail depot.
The joint team of UPMRC and RITES surveyed multiple locations — including Army land in Chivki, land belonging to SHUATS, a closed industrial unit, and another plot in Arail.
Efforts will now begin to finalize one of these sites for constructing the depot.
Earlier, a depot for the proposed metro on the Phaphamau–Naini route had been planned at Chivki, but due to security concerns, the Army has not shown interest in allocating its land. Consequently, UPMRC and RITES have started searching for alternative land parcels.
Both agencies will jointly decide the final depot location. A PDA engineer stated that metro work is expected to commence soon, and a fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared.
Before drafting the DPR, the route alignment and depot land must be finalized. The proposal includes metro rail operations on the Phaphamau–Naini and Bamrauli–Jhunsi corridors.
Earlier, a DPR had been prepared for Metro Lite services, but based on UPMRC’s recommendation, the plan has now been upgraded to a full-fledged metro system.
The depot for the Bamrauli–Jhunsi route will be constructed in Jhunsi.
Meanwhile, Prayagraj: Construction of the six-lane bridge over the Ganga at Phaphamau has entered its final phase. Work on three pillars covering a span of 200 meters was completed on February 14, while construction of the remaining final pillar has also reached 60 percent completion.
Along the four-kilometre stretch across the Ganga, four pillars within an 800-meter segment were pending. Of these, three pillars have now been completed, and the superstructure of one pillar has also been prepared by Singla Company.
The fourth pillar is expected to be completed within one and a half months. Thereafter, within a month, the superstructure connecting all four pillars will be installed.
Company officials claim that traffic movement on the bridge will begin in August.
Assistant Superintending Engineer Varun Varshney stated that weekly progress reports are being sent to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Except for the remaining 800-meter stretch, the rest of the bridge work has been completed.
Plans are underway to place the structural span by May, followed by one to two months of beautification and road finishing works.
