Prayagraj Set for Major Infrastructure Leap with ₹3,000-Crore Bridge Expansion Plan

PRAYAGRAJ: The historic city of Prayagraj, known as the confluence of culture, faith, and geography, is now preparing for one of its most ambitious infrastructural transformations in decades.

The district administration has proposed an expansive plan worth ₹3,000 crore to construct four new bridges across the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, marking a significant step toward easing congestion, improving connectivity, and accommodating the city’s rapid growth.

This ambitious project, which has already received in-principle approval from the Government of Uttar Pradesh, will be executed by the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation.

Once completed, these new bridges are expected to redefine Prayagraj’s urban landscape and strengthen its position as one of northern India’s most strategically connected cities.

Two Bridges Over the Ganga: New Arteries of Connectivity

The sacred River Ganga, which blesses the city with both beauty and boundaries, will soon have two new bridges that promise to transform Prayagraj’s commuting patterns.

The first bridge, connecting Salori to Hetapatti, will stretch approximately 3.7 kilometres and cost around ₹965 crore. It is not just a local link — it will directly connect Prayagraj to the Ganga Expressway via a 3.5-kilometre dedicated corridor, enabling faster freight movement and significantly reducing travel time between eastern Uttar Pradesh and western regions of the state.

The second Ganga bridge will connect Daraganj to Jhunsi through the Old Grand Trunk (GT) Road, a historic route that once linked Kabul to Kolkata. Spanning over 2.3 kilometres and costing about ₹844 crore, this bridge will revive the city’s ancient trade routes while offering modern convenience to thousands of daily commuters.

Two Bridges Over the Yamuna: Strengthening the Southern Axis

The Yamuna River, which flows gracefully through the southern side of Prayagraj, will also witness two major additions.

A four-lane bridge between Karelabagh and Makoda, estimated at ₹479 crore, will serve as a vital urban connector equipped with pedestrian pathways and enhanced safety features.

The other, a six-lane bridge parallel to the existing Yamuna Bridge on the Naini route, will span 1.5 kilometres and come at a cost of around ₹620 crore. This structure will relieve the heavy vehicular pressure on the current bridge and provide a seamless link between Naini Industrial Area and central Prayagraj.

The Expanding City of Confluence

Prayagraj’s geographical uniqueness — surrounded by the Ganga and Yamuna on three sides — has long been both its pride and its challenge.

With limited space for horizontal expansion, the city has been steadily growing outward across its riverbanks, where new housing colonies and residential projects have emerged in Jhunsi, Naini, and Phaphamau.

Over the last three decades, Prayagraj has witnessed massive urban expansion, spurred by educational institutions, industrial hubs, and administrative development.

Adding to this complexity is Prayagraj’s status as one of India’s most connected railway junctions. The Prayagraj Junction (formerly Allahabad Junction) is among the busiest in the country, with the highest number of trains passing through it daily, linking nearly every major region of India.

This massive flow of people and goods underscores the urgent need for improved road and bridge infrastructure to complement the existing railway network.

A Vision for the Future

District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma confirmed that detailed cost estimates have been submitted to the state government, and official orders for commencement are expected soon.

Once the green light is received, construction will begin in phases, ushering in a new era of connectivity for Prayagraj and its adjoining districts.

These projects are not just about roads and bridges — they are about bridging heritage with modernity. As a city that connects India’s past, present, and future through its rivers, roads, and railways, Prayagraj’s upcoming bridge network will play a pivotal role in ensuring that its growth remains sustainable, accessible, and inclusive.
