Projectile Strike in Saudi Arabia Kills Indian National, Injures Several as West Asia Conflict Spreads
At least two people, including an Indian citizen, were killed on Sunday after a military projectile struck a residential area in Saudi Arabia.
The incident also left several others injured and caused property damage, authorities confirmed.
According to officials, the strike occurred in the central governorate of Al-Kharj, where the projectile landed within a residential compound.
Emergency services reported that a total of 12 individuals—comprising nationals from India and Bangladesh—sustained injuries in the explosion.
The Saudi Civil Defence confirmed the incident through a statement posted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
The statement said a military munition had fallen on a housing facility in Al-Kharj Governorate, resulting in the deaths of two residents and injuries to twelve others who were present at the site.
Victims Were Workers at a residential facility
Providing further details about the incident, the spokesperson of the Saudi Civil Defence explained that the projectile struck a residential complex used by a maintenance and sanitation services company.
Authorities stated that the attack led to the death of one Indian national, while the injured victims included individuals from both India and Bangladesh. The explosion also caused material destruction at the site.
Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the area to provide medical assistance to the injured and secure the affected location.
Saudi Authorities Condemn Attack
Saudi officials strongly criticised the targeting of civilian areas and emphasised that attacks on non-military locations violate international humanitarian law.
The Civil Defence spokesperson said attempts to strike civilian infrastructure represent a serious breach of internationally recognised legal standards governing armed conflicts.
He added that the relevant emergency and investigative procedures had been initiated in accordance with established protocols.
Escalation Amid Widening Regional War
The incident comes at a time when tensions across West Asia are intensifying amid the ongoing war involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
The regional conflict has increasingly spread beyond its original battlegrounds, with several Gulf nations now reporting missile and drone threats.
In recent days, Iran has been accused of targeting critical infrastructure in the Gulf.
Authorities in Bahrain alleged that Tehran launched an attack on one of the country’s desalination plants—facilities that are essential for supplying drinking water in the arid Gulf region.
Regional Leaders Express Concern
The alleged attacks have heightened anxiety across the Middle East, as hundreds of missiles and drones reportedly launched by Iran have struck or threatened various locations across Gulf countries.
Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, criticised Iran’s actions and described them as a “reckless policy” that risks destabilising Arab states.
Regional leaders have warned that continued strikes on civilian infrastructure could dramatically escalate the conflict and deepen humanitarian concerns.
Conflict Origin and Rising Death Toll
The current war erupted on February 28 when Israel and the United States launched coordinated airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, military installations, and senior leadership figures.
During the initial wave of attacks, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed, triggering a series of retaliatory operations by Tehran against Israeli and American interests across the Middle East.
Since the outbreak of hostilities, the violence has caused heavy casualties across several countries.
According to official figures cited in reports by Associated Press, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 1,230 people in Iran, 397 individuals in Lebanon, and 11 people in Israel so far.
With missile attacks and military operations continuing across multiple fronts, fears are growing that the conflict could expand further, placing more civilian populations and critical infrastructure at risk.
