Purnea MP Pappu Yadav Sent to Jail; Congress Calls Arrest an Act of Political Vendetta

New Delhi / Patna: The Congress on Saturday strongly condemned the arrest of Lok Sabha Member Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, with senior party leaders terming the action a clear case of political vendetta.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Purnea MP was being intimidated and targeted for raising his voice in pursuit of justice in connection with the death of a NEET aspirant in Bihar. Describing the arrest as politically motivated,

Rahul Gandhi said such actions reflected an attempt to silence those who speak up against injustice.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed solidarity with Pappu Yadav. She accused the BJP and its allies of standing with oppression, asserting that the use of state machinery against political opponents was deeply troubling and undemocratic.

Meanwhile, in Patna, Pappu Yadav was sent to judicial custody in connection with a 31-year-old criminal case.

He was arrested late Friday night at his residence. On Saturday afternoon, he was produced before the MP-MLA Special Court at the Patna Civil Court, where the court ordered that he be remanded to judicial custody and sent to jail.

The court stated that his bail application would be heard on Monday. Yadav’s counsel moved an application seeking his release on bail, while the police prosecution opposed the plea, arguing that the matter should be taken up only after he is formally placed in judicial custody.

The MP-MLA Special Court’s Judicial Magistrate Praveen Kumar Malviya ordered that Pappu Yadav be sent to jail and also directed the authorities to ensure proper medical treatment for him.

Patna Police brought the arrested MP to the Civil Court premises in an ambulance. He was taken to the special court on a stretcher and was administered medication through an intravenous drip during the court proceedings.

Despite his medical condition, Pappu Yadav signed the case records in court before being remanded to judicial custody.

The arrest and subsequent judicial custody of the Purnea MP have triggered sharp political reactions, with the Congress alleging misuse of law-enforcement agencies, while legal proceedings in the decades-old case are set to continue with the bail hearing scheduled for Monday.
