Students Allege Hair-Cutting, Verbal Abuse, and Late-Night Intimidation by Seniors; Report to be Submitted by October 14
PRAYAGRAJ: A fresh case of alleged ragging has surfaced at the Sir Sunder Lal (SSL) Hostel of Allahabad University (AU), prompting swift administrative action.
The complaint, registered through the university’s official anti-ragging portal, was filed by first-year students, who accused senior hostel residents of harassment and intimidation.
According to the complaint, the seniors not only forcibly cut the juniors’ hair but also used abusive language, causing mental distress.
The complainants further alleged that they were summoned late at night, threatened, and subjected to humiliating treatment within the hostel premises.
Taking serious note of the incident, the Allahabad University administration has constituted a four-member fact-finding committee to investigate the allegations.
The committee includes Dr. Shiv Kumar Yadav, Dr. Gyan Singh Yadav, Dr. Prateek Srivastava, and Dr. Anand Pratap Chand.
Chief Proctor Professor Rakesh Singh confirmed that the committee has been directed to submit its detailed report by October 14, after which disciplinary measures will be initiated based on the findings.
“The university has zero tolerance for ragging,” Prof. Singh stated. “Any student found guilty will face strict punishment under the Anti-Ragging Act as well as the University’s disciplinary code.”
Sources within the university indicated that approximately 15 senior students have been identified for their suspected involvement in the incident, suggesting that this may be a case of collective ragging rather than isolated misconduct.
The development comes close on the heels of a similar episode last month at the PCB Hostel, where a surprise inspection by university authorities uncovered serious instances of ragging. In that case, 18 students were suspended following a formal inquiry, signaling the administration’s firm stance against such behaviour.
The Chief Proctor’s office has now instructed the Proctorial Board to maintain round-the-clock surveillance across all university hostels and to respond immediately to any complaints or signs of misconduct. University authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all students.
The Allahabad University administration has urged students to report any incidents of ragging promptly and assured that their identities will be kept strictly confidential to protect them from retaliation.
