Even after sustaining a leg injury during a local league match, Indian cricket legend and newly appointed head coach of Rajasthan Royals, Rahul Dravid, showcased his unwavering commitment by attending the team’s pre-season training session for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. His dedication to the franchise was evident as he remained actively involved in the proceedings despite his physical discomfort.
In a video shared by the Rajasthan Royals on their official social media platforms, Dravid was seen making his first appearance at the team’s training camp. He arrived at the venue in a golf cart before transitioning to crutches to move around the facility. The sight of the former Indian captain, known for his resilience and determination, inspired both the players and fans alike.
Although his left leg was secured in a medical walking boot as part of his recovery process, Dravid did not let the injury deter him from his responsibilities. He greeted and shook hands with the players, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and enthusiasm within the squad. His interactions with the young talents of the team were particularly notable. He engaged in a detailed conversation with promising batter Riyan Parag, offering insights and words of encouragement. In another moment captured during the session, Dravid was seen sharing a light-hearted exchange with Yashasvi Jaiswal. The young India opener demonstrated shadow shots in front of Dravid, seeking valuable batting advice from the cricketing stalwart.
Despite being seated for most of the session with crutches in hand, Dravid meticulously observed the training drills and team activities on Wednesday. His presence not only boosted the morale of the players but also reinforced his hands-on approach as a mentor and leader.
The Rajasthan Royals franchise had earlier confirmed the unfortunate incident regarding Dravid’s injury, reassuring fans of his well-being. In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), the team shared a photo of a relaxed Dravid giving a thumbs-up, with the caption, “Head Coach Rahul Dravid, who picked up an injury while playing Cricket in Bangalore, is recovering well and will join us today in Jaipur.”
Dravid sustained the injury last week while representing the Vijaya Cricket Club in a high-stakes Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Group I, Division 2 semifinal for the Sri Nassur Memorial Shield. Playing against Jayanagar Cricketers, the 52-year-old was part of a crucial match that also featured his 16-year-old son, Anvay. Just two deliveries into his innings, Dravid appeared visibly uncomfortable after reportedly pulling his left calf muscle while batting. However, in true Dravid fashion, he displayed immense grit and perseverance, continuing to bat despite the pain. He went on to score a determined 43 runs off 66 balls, forming a vital fourth-wicket partnership with Anvay. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, the Vijaya Cricket Club fell short and lost the match.
Earlier in the season, Dravid had made headlines for marking his first club cricket appearance in 13 years. In that league match, he once again took the field alongside his son Anvay. While the young batter was impressed with a fluent 60-ball 58, Dravid contributed 10 runs before being dismissed.
Following the conclusion of his tenure as India’s head coach from 2022 to 2024, Dravid transitioned into his new role with the Rajasthan Royals. Under his leadership, India enjoyed significant success, culminating in their triumphant T20 World Cup campaign. As he takes charge of the Royals, he is expected to play a key role in shaping the team’s strategies and nurturing young talents. Working closely with Rajasthan Royals’ captain Sanju Samson and Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara, Dravid aims to guide the franchise to new heights in the upcoming IPL season. His vast experience, leadership skills, and unwavering dedication make him a valuable asset to the team, and his presence at the training session, despite the injury, is a testament to his commitment to the sport and the players he mentors.
