Rajpal Yadav Breaks Silence on Cheque Bounce Dispute, Calls It “A Battle of Intentions, Not Money”

At a media interaction held in Mumbai on Saturday, actor Rajpal Yadav addressed the long-running cheque bounce case linked to his debut production venture, Ata Pata Laapata.

Standing alongside his legal counsel, advocate Bhaskar Upadhyay, the actor presented his side of a dispute that dates back over a decade.

According to his lawyer, industrialist Madhav Gopal Agarwal of M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd had invested ₹5 crore into the film.

However, due to what the defence described as steep interest calculations, the outstanding amount allegedly escalated to ₹10.40 crore over time.

The legal team argued that the disagreement was never simply about repayment but about intent.

Upadhyay claimed that in 2018, Yadav had deposited a security amount before the court and had also offered to pledge property documents to resolve the matter.

He alleged that the complainant declined these options and instead pursued incarceration.

“Had the security been accepted, the matter could have concluded years ago,” the lawyer stated, accusing the complainant of attempting to damage the actor’s public reputation.

Yadav, known for his comic roles in Hindi cinema, defended his integrity, saying he has often reduced or waived his fees when producers faced financial strain.

He also spoke about adopting his native village and contributing towards its progress.

The actor explained that he founded his production banner with the intention of supporting aspiring artists from smaller towns who struggle to find opportunities in the industry.

Reflecting on the past decade, Yadav said the setbacks have strengthened his professional outlook. He claimed to have signed multiple branding agreements projected to be worth approximately ₹1,200 crore over the next seven years.

These deals, he clarified, include a mix of fees and equity participation, separate from the ten films he says are currently in the pipeline.

He also expressed gratitude to supporters who extended financial and emotional backing in recent weeks.

From children contributing savings to substantial amounts raised through social media, Yadav said he intends to return every rupee once given time.

“I am thankful for the affection and trust,” he said, adding that while debts can be repaid, public goodwill carries a different weight.

Addressing the complainant directly, Yadav alleged that personal resentment fueled the dispute. He claimed tensions escalated after a 2011 music launch event for Ata Pata Laapata, which was attended by megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

According to Yadav, one of the investors felt sidelined, leading to a fallout the following day.

Recounting the origins of the project, Yadav said the idea took shape around 2005 with the support of a friend from Mumbai. By 2008, the film industry was grappling with economic slowdown and a prolonged strike, leaving many projects stalled.

Amid that uncertainty, he and a group of theatre associates decided to produce a modest film featuring stage performers — a decision that ultimately led to the current legal entanglement.

Earlier this February, Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail in connection with the 2012 cheque bounce proceedings.

In previous interviews, he has maintained that the matter does not involve fraud or deliberate default but stems from disagreements over evolving contractual terms, which he claims to have repeatedly accommodated.

He further alleged that a stay order was later secured from the High Court, delaying the film’s release and compounding financial strain.

Throughout the press conference, Yadav reiterated that he seeks a fair hearing in court and has no intention of evading legal process.

“A king remains a king — whether inside prison walls or outside,” he remarked, underscoring his resolve to face the situation head-on.

As the legal proceedings continue, the actor insists that truth and patience will ultimately determine the outcome.
