Ram Mandir Dhwaja Built to Withstand Storms and Rain: A Symbol of Endurance and Devotion

The sacred Dharm Dhwaja that now proudly waves atop the Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is not only spiritually significant but also an engineering marvel built to withstand extreme weather conditions, including storms and heavy rainfall.

Crafted from high-grade parachute fabric at the Kanpur-based Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF), the flag’s colours and material are designed to remain unaffected by sunlight or rain for years.

Officials from the OPF handed over the meticulously crafted flag to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust during their visit to Ayodhya on November 18.

Weatherproof Fabric and Special Design

Manufactured from world-class nylon parachute material, the Dhwaja is highly resilient to natural elements such as scorching heat, strong winds, and monsoon rains.

Experts estimate that the vibrant colour will remain intact for at least two to three years despite continuous exposure to weather extremes.

The design of the Dharm Dhwaja was engraved and finalised at the Kanpur factory itself. The flag weighs approximately 2.5 kilograms and is mounted at a height of 191 feet above the main temple structure, supported by a 44-foot-long flag mast.

Symbolism of the Sacred Emblems

The Dhwaja features the emblem of the Ikshvaku dynasty—the Kovidar tree, representing the royal lineage of Lord Rama.

The tree, often visually comparable to the Kachnar, embodies the combined virtues of the sacred Mandar and Parijat trees.

Renowned for its medicinal properties, the Kovidar is revered as a symbol of the Raghu dynasty—known for its commitment to protecting others, standing firm under the sun while offering shade to those in need.

In the centre of the flag is a radiant representation of the Sun, within which is inscribed the sacred symbol ‘Om’, signifying divine resolve and steadfast spiritual energy.

RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat highlighted that the Sun symbolises determination and accomplishment through self-effort.

Swami Govind Dev Giri, Treasurer of the Ram Janmabhoomi Trust, emphasised that the Dhwaja has been crafted entirely in accordance with ancient Raghuvanshi traditions and values.

21 Days of Precision Craftsmanship

A dedicated team of 11 expert engineers and technicians at OPF Kanpur worked for 21 days to complete the flag.

The project was initiated after the trustees of the Ram Mandir approached the Government seeking a highly durable flag that would match the sanctity and stature of the temple.

In response, Gliders India Limited—under the Ministry of Defence—entrusted the responsibility to the Ordnance Parachute Factory, whose team engineered the Dhwaja using advanced textile technology typically used for defence-grade parachutes.

Today, this magnificent flag stands not only as a symbol of devotion but also as a testament to Indian craftsmanship, scientific innovation, and cultural pride.
