Delhi, November 10 — At approximately 6:50 pm, a powerful explosion erupted inside a moving Hyundai i20 near the traffic signal outside Lal Qila Metro Station (Gate No.1) on Subhash Marg, Delhi.

The blast ripped through the hatchback and spread fire to nearby parked cars and three auto-rickshaws.

Shattered glass and flaming metal filled the scene, and witnesses heard the boom from kilometres away, including at the ITO area.

Emergency services dispatched seven fire-tenders and multiple ambulances. Authorities confirmed at least eight fatalities and over a dozen injured.
Investigators traced the vehicle’s registration to a Gurugram-resident,

Mohammad Salman, who has been detained and is being questioned. He claims to have sold the car some time ago to a buyer in Okhla, Delhi, and police are now tracing subsequent transfers and current possession of the vehicle.

The explosion triggered a full-scale investigation involving the Delhi Police Special Branch, Crime Branch, the NIA, NSG and forensic teams from the FSL.

They are exploring all possibilities—terror attack, sabotage or accident—by reviewing CCTV and ANPR data, examining ownership trail, conducting forensic analysis at the site and tracing the chain of custody of the car.

Security has been heightened across the capital and bordering states.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed a detailed probe, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow and directed swift action.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi  extended his condolences to the families of those killed in the Delhi explosion, calling the incident deeply tragic.

He also wished a swift and complete recovery to every individual injured in the blast.

The Prime Minister said he had spoken to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior officials to take stock of the situation and ensure that all necessary assistance is being provided.

In a post on X, Modi wrote that he was anguished by the loss of lives and assured that the government is closely monitoring developments.

“Heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening.

I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured. All those affected are being extended every possible help.

I have reviewed the situation with Home Minister Amit Shah Ji and senior officials,” the post said.

Home Minister Amit Shah also issued a statement, stressing that no angle will be overlooked during the probe.

He said all central and state investigative agencies have been mobilised and directed to examine every possible lead to establish the cause of the blast and bring those responsible to justice.

Officials said the explosion resulted in a massive fire, engulfing multiple vehicles at the site. According to initial reports, six cars, four motorcycles, and three e-rickshaws were set ablaze due to the intensity of the blast.

The Delhi Fire Service confirmed that it received a call regarding a loud explosion and vehicles catching fire at around 6:55 pm. Seven fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the location.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control within approximately 40 minutes, and cooling operations were carried out to prevent reignition, the DFS statement added.

Following the incident, personnel from the Delhi Police Special Cell, accompanied by local police units, cordoned off the area and launched preliminary investigations.

Forensic teams collected samples from the charred remains of the vehicles and surrounding structures.

Given the sensitivity of the incident, elite agencies including the National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have been pressed into service.

Their teams are examining the blast site, evaluating explosive traces (if any), reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to eyewitnesses.

Authorities have put Delhi on high alert, increasing patrolling in key areas, tightening perimeter checks, and enhancing security at major transport hubs and public places.

Investigations are ongoing, and officials have urged the public not to speculate and rely only on verified information.

Hospitals near the blast site remain on emergency alert, and public appeals for blood donations have been issued.

The city remains tensely alert as forensic and intelligence agencies work through the night.

Key unanswered questions remain: who was driving or inside the car at the time of the blast? What exactly caused the explosion? Is the incident part of a wider terror network?
