Rohini Acharya’s Shock Exit Deepens Turmoil in Lalu Prasad’s Family After RJD’s Bihar Poll Rout
Shortly after the Mahagathbandhan, led by the RJD, faced a resounding defeat against the ruling NDA in the Bihar Assembly elections, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya stunned the political sphere on Saturday by announcing that she was stepping away from public life and cutting off ties with her own family.
In a terse message posted on X, Acharya declared, “I am quitting politics and I am disowning my family… This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do, and I am taking all the blame.”
Her statement landed at a sensitive moment — just as the RJD saw its seat count collapse from 75 in 2020 to a mere 25 this year, allowing the NDA to reclaim the state with ease.
A medical professional by qualification, Acharya had long preferred a private life, choosing to settle in Singapore with her husband and children before entering politics more actively in recent years.
She did not reveal what exactly transpired with Sanjay Yadav or Rameez, both close to Tejashwi Yadav. Neither of the two responded to requests for clarification.
Sanjay, a Rajya Sabha MP, has for years been regarded as Tejashwi’s most trusted strategist, while Rameez is known to be one of Tejashwi’s old friends from Uttar Pradesh with considerable influence in the inner circle.
Acharya’s decision comes against the backdrop of escalating strains within the Yadav household — tensions that have become increasingly visible over the past few months.
Just weeks earlier, she had unfollowed both Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi on X, an unmistakable signal of discord.
This move followed her critical posts aimed at Sanjay Yadav’s growing authority within the RJD.
Rohini has been a prominent public figure ever since 2022, when she donated a kidney to her ailing father during his treatment in Singapore — an act that earned her immense goodwill among party loyalists.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, she contested from Saran but was defeated by the BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy by more than 13,600 votes.
Rumblings of dissatisfaction had been simmering within the family since the expulsion of her elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav in May, after he hinted at a long-standing relationship with a woman on social media.
Though she had stood with Tejashwi during the campaign, insiders say her disillusionment only grew.
Party sources reveal that while Rohini had no desire to contest an Assembly seat, she had been keen to influence candidate selection in the constituencies falling under Saran — her home turf and future political base for a possible 2029 return.
However, her inputs were reportedly dismissed by Tejashwi and Sanjay Yadav. With Lalu Prasad refusing to step into the quarrel, Rohini returned to Singapore, unfollowing several RJD figures online in protest.
The internal disharmony intensified ahead of the Assembly polls when Rohini reshared a post objecting to Sanjay’s placement in the front seat of Tejashwi’s “Bihar Adhikar Yatra” bus — a position traditionally reserved for Lalu or Tejashwi.
The gesture triggered backlash within the family, prompting Rohini to issue clarifications stressing the need for social justice and inclusive leadership.
Her critique of Sanjay also echoed broader discomfort within sections of the RJD about his expanding hold over Tejashwi’s political decisions.
Meanwhile, Tej Pratap, after being cast out of both the family and the party, launched his own group — the Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD) — though it failed to secure a single seat in the elections.
Rohini’s dramatic departure now marks yet another rupture in Bihar’s most influential political dynasty, exposing the widening cracks that the party’s electoral drubbing has brought to the surface.
