Russia Renews Offer for Direct Peace Talks in Moscow as Diplomatic Pressure Mounts Over Ukraine War

Amid escalating international efforts, particularly led by the United States, to bring an end to the nearly four-year-long conflict in Ukraine, the Kremlin announced on Thursday that it has once again extended an invitation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to visit Moscow for face-to-face peace negotiations.

The statement came at a time when both Russia and Ukraine conducted another exchange of the bodies of fallen soldiers — a rare humanitarian coordination between the two warring sides.

It also followed shortly after Russian officials chose not to respond to speculation suggesting that Moscow and Kyiv may have reached an understanding to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, a development that, if confirmed, could signal a limited easing of hostilities.

Russian authorities emphasized that the invitation for direct talks remains open, positioning Moscow as willing to engage in dialogue.

However, this is not the first such proposal. Last year, the Kremlin made a similar offer, which Zelenskyy firmly declined.

At the time, the Ukrainian leader argued that it was impossible to travel to the capital of a country that continued launching daily missile strikes against Ukraine.

In a pointed response, Zelenskyy suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin should instead come to Kyiv if he truly wished to pursue peace negotiations.

The renewed outreach reflects growing diplomatic maneuvering as global powers push for a resolution to one of Europe’s most destructive conflicts in decades, though deep mistrust between the two sides continues to hinder meaningful progress.
