Sambhal Village on Edge After Girl Found at Youth’s House; Kidnapping Case Registered, Police Launch Search
Tension prevailed in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal on Saturday after police registered a case against a young man from a minority community on allegations of abducting a college-going girl belonging to another community.
The development triggered unrest in the locality as members of a right-wing organisation assembled outside the youth’s residence, claiming that the girl had been kept there against her will.
According to police officials, the girl, a second-semester undergraduate student, was discovered at the youth’s house located roughly four kilometres from her own residence.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that the two were acquainted and attended the same coaching centre. Investigators believe the girl had travelled to the youth’s home on his scooter earlier in the day.
After receiving information about the situation, a police team rushed to the village and took the girl into protective custody.
Authorities subsequently shifted her to a government-run women’s shelter, where she will remain while officials complete formal procedures and record her statement.
In his complaint to the police, the girl’s father said she had left home around 8 am on Saturday to attend her coaching classes but failed to return for several hours, prompting the family to grow anxious and begin searching for her.
“My daughter had gone to attend her coaching class in the morning,g but did not come back home as expected. We became worried and started making inquiries.
Later, Bajrang Dal leader Ashish Tufani and some other people informed me about her whereabouts, after which I immediately approached the police,” said the girl’s 44-year-old father, who works for a private company in Sambhal.
He further stated that although the accused youth studied at the same coaching institute as his daughter, he had never personally met him before.
Police officials confirmed that an FIR has been lodged and teams have been dispatched to locate the youth, who fled the scene before the police arrived.
The station house officer (SHO) of the concerned police station said investigators are also verifying the exact age of the youth named in the complaint.
Meanwhile, Bajrang Dal’s district convener in Sambhal, Ashish Tufani, claimed that members of the organisation had received prior information that the youth was bringing a girl from another community to his residence.
“After receiving the tip-off, we reached the spot and alerted the police. However, by the time the police arrived, the youth had already escaped. The girl was later found inside the house by the police team,” Tufani said.
The village, which has residents from multiple communities, witnessed heightened tension following the incident.
As a precautionary measure, additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident. Attempts to reach the youth’s family members for their response were unsuccessful.
Authorities said further action will depend on the girl’s statement and the findings of the ongoing investigation.
