Former Indian all-rounder and seasoned cricket analyst Sanjay Bangar has shared his thoughts on the future of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend MS Dhoni, suggesting that the time may have come for the veteran to step away from the game.
In a conversation with ESPN Cricinfo, Bangar reflected on the immense physical and mental challenges of continuing to play professional cricket at an advanced age, especially in a demanding league like the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“At the age of 43, it’s extremely difficult to sustain performance in such a highly competitive environment,” Bangar remarked. “It’s not just about playing top-level cricket— even participating in local matches at that age can be incredibly taxing on the body. The demands are relentless, and recovery takes longer.”
Putting himself in Dhoni’s shoes for a moment, Bangar imagined what the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman might be contemplating. “If I were MS, I would probably say this is enough. I’ve played all that I ever dreamed of. I’ve contributed significantly, not only to Indian cricket but also to the Chennai Super Kings franchise.
If my motivation was to ensure the team’s continuity or to help with the transition, I believe I’ve done my part. Now, it’s time to step aside.”
Dhoni, who has served as the face of CSK for over a decade and has led the team to multiple IPL titles, has been lauded for his calm demeanor, sharp cricketing mind, and leadership qualities.
However, as the years have progressed, discussions around his retirement have grown louder with each passing season.
Bangar emphasized that transitions in cricket, especially within successful franchises, are rarely smooth or perfectly timed. “If MS is staying back thinking that his presence will make the transition easier, then it’s important to realize there is never a perfect moment for change.
These things are unpredictable. Sometimes, it’s better to accept that the journey has reached its natural end and trust the team to evolve without you.”
He went on to say that by lingering on, Dhoni might unintentionally delay the inevitable changes the team must go through. “Even if the team takes an extra season to adapt, that’s part of the natural cycle. MS doesn’t need to carry that burden any longer.
He should be at peace with the legacy he has built and understand that the franchise will find its path forward, even in his absence.”
As CSK approaches the end of what has been a disappointing IPL campaign, with only one match left to play this season, attention has naturally shifted to what lies ahead.
The team, known for its consistency and strong performances over the years, has struggled in this edition and will be looking to reset and regroup ahead of the next season.
Regardless of what decision Dhoni ultimately makes, it is clear that his presence in the CSK camp has had a profound impact on the team and fans alike.
But as Sanjay Bangar points out, even legends must eventually bow out, and perhaps now is the time for Dhoni to bid farewell to the game as a player, on his terms, and with his head held high.
