Screenwriting Legend Salim Khan Hospitalised in Mumbai; Family by His Side as Film Fraternity Prays for Recovery
Mumbai: Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, one of the architects of mainstream Hindi cinema’s golden era, has been admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra, Mumbai, prompting concern across the film industry.
The 90-year-old writer, who has been undergoing medical observation, is currently under intensive care monitoring, sources at the hospital said.
According to people close to the family, Salim Khan was taken to the hospital on Tuesday morning after age-related complications. Doctors have kept him in the ICU for precautionary supervision.
Late-evening updates indicate his condition is stable but under close observation, and a team of specialists is monitoring his vital parameters.
Family members, including his son, actor Salman Khan, have been visiting him regularly.
The Man Who Changed Hindi Cinema’s Storytelling
Salim Khan rose to prominence in the 1970s as part of the iconic screenwriting duo Salim-Javed with lyricist-writer Javed Akhtar.
Together, they reshaped the narrative style of commercial Hindi films, introducing strong characters, socially rooted conflicts, and unforgettable dialogues.
The duo penned landmark films such as Sholay, Deewaara,r and Trishul, stories that captured public sentiment and gave rise to the legendary “angry young man” persona immortalised on screen by Amitabh Bachchan.
Their scripts redefined heroism — replacing romantic softness with intensity and moral conflict — and influenced decades of Indian filmmaking.
After the partnership ended, Salim Khan continued writing independently and delivered notable works, including Naam, maintaining his reputation as a storyteller who understood mass emotions.
A Family Deeply Connected to Bollywood
Salim Khan’s legacy extends beyond writing — it lives on through his family, many of whom are integral to the film industry.
His eldest son, Salman Khan, is among Hindi cinema’s biggest stars, dominating box office charts for over three decades.
Beginning his career in the late 1980s, Salman built a massive fan following through romantic roles before reinventing himself as an action superstar in the 2000s.
Known for blockbuster entertainers, philanthropic work through the Being Human foundation, and a devoted fan base across India and abroad, Salman remains one of the most influential figures in contemporary Bollywood.
Salim Khan’s other children — Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan, and Alvira Khan Agnihotri — are also associated with film production and direction. He is married to Salma Khan, and later married veteran actress Helen; together they raised daughter Arpita Khan.
Industry Concern and Support
News of the hospitalisation quickly spread across film circles, with colleagues and admirers sending wishes for his recovery.
Visitors have been limited due to medical supervision, though close family members remain present at the hospital.
Doctors are expected to review his condition over the next 24 hours. For now, hospital sources emphasise there is no immediate danger, but given his age, careful monitoring continues.
Salim Khan is widely regarded as one of the foundational figures of modern Bollywood storytelling — and across the industry, hopes remain high for his steady recovery.
