Shot at Dusk: Businessman Gunned Down in Moradabad in Brazen Attack Linked to Family Feud
In a chilling display of audacity, a 62-year-old businessman was shot dead at close range in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad on Friday evening while heading for prayers — an attack that has raised troubling questions about law and order and the brazenness of armed assailants.
Mohammad Asad, father of an Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate posted in Bulandshahr, was on his way to a mosque with his brother-in-law, Mujahi,d when the killers struck.
The incident took place near Bangla Crossing under the Nagfani police station limits, an area that witnesses say was still active with evening movement when gunfire shattered the calm.
According to police, two men riding a motorcycle intercepted the scooter carrying Asad and Mujahid.
In a calculated move, the bike was positioned directly in front of the two-wheeler, forcing it to halt. Before the victims could react, the pillion rider allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Asad in the head from point-blank range.
The precision and swiftness of the attack left little chance for survival.
Asad collapsed instantly. Mujahid, who was driving, lost control of the scooter amid the shock and confusion.
Locals rushed to the scene on hearing the gunshot, but in the ensuing chaos, the assailants managed to flee without resistance — underscoring the boldness with which the crime was executed.
Police teams rushed Asad to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Investigators suspect the main accused to be Jafar Hussain — another brother-in-law of the deceased — with whom Asad had an ongoing dispute.
A month before the killing, Asad had filed an extortion complaint against Hussain and his two sons.
In his complaint, Asad alleged that on December 22, the accused intercepted his car while he was returning home with his family and demanded Rs 10 lakh, threatening his life and business if he failed to comply.
An FIR was registered and a chargesheet filed in that case.
Police sources indicate that a long-standing property dispute within the family may have further inflamed tensions, with Asad reportedly siding with one faction.
Superintendent of Police, Moradabad, Satpal, said multiple police teams have been deployed to track down Hussain.
Authorities describe him as a history-sheeter, with a dossier opened against him in 1993.
While no serious criminal cases have been registered against him since 1999, his record has now come under renewed scrutiny.
Asad, a resident of Jigar Colony, ran a local bakery and was known in the area as a quiet businessman.
His killing, executed with calculated boldness in a public space, has sparked unease among residents who question how armed attackers could carry out such a targeted murder and escape so swiftly.
The case now stands as a grim reminder of how festering personal disputes, if left unchecked, can erupt into violent retribution — and how criminals, emboldened by familiarity and past impunity, can strike with alarming confidence.
