Naini, Prayagraj:
The dark underbelly of teacher-run coaching rackets came to light once again in Naini, Prayagraj, where a Class 12 girl student of a private school was driven into severe depression and had to be hospitalized after allegedly being harassed and humiliated by her schoolteacher.
Her only “fault”? She chose not to enroll in the teacher’s personal coaching classes—a practice that has become an unchecked business empire in many schools.
According to reports, the shocking case unfolded in a school located near the Kondhari area of Naini. The 17-year-old girl, a promising student from Barahaj in Deoria district, was constantly pressured to join her schoolteacher’s coaching center.
When she resisted, she was repeatedly insulted in front of her classmates. Unable to bear the humiliation, she slipped into deep depression.
On August 21, her health deteriorated so severely that she was rushed to a private hospital in Naini and admitted in critical condition. Initially, her family was unaware of the true reason for her condition.
However, after the second day of treatment, her relatives learned the disturbing truth: she had been mentally tortured by the teacher for refusing to attend his coaching.
Her family has now filed a complaint and called for strict action against the teacher and the school administration, alleging that such harassment is not isolated but part of a larger racket where educators exploit their authority to force students into paid private classes—turning education into a high-pressure business rather than a nurturing environment.
Sadly, such incidents are increasingly common, as schools and teachers—who should be mentors—transform classrooms into recruitment grounds for their coaching businesses, destroying students’ mental health in the process.
The fact that a bright teenager had to be hospitalized is a chilling wake-up call for education authorities to end the toxic culture of coercion and profiteering in education.
The family has demanded a thorough investigation, accountability for the teacher, and assurances that students won’t be victimized for refusing extra coaching.
This horrifying incident raises a pressing question: When will education stop being a money-making racket and return to being a haven for students?
