Kannada cinema’s “Challenging Star” Darshan Thoogudeepa, revered for his towering on-screen persona and portrayal of valiant heroes in commercial blockbusters, has found himself at the centre of a high-profile legal storm that has shaken the Southern film industry and stunned his massive fanbase.
The 47-year-old actor was arrested on June 11, 2024, in connection with the alleged murder of his fan, 33-year-old Renukaswamy, whose body was discovered near a stormwater drain in Bengaluru on June 9. The incident reportedly stemmed from the victim allegedly sending obscene messages to Darshan’s close associate, Pavithra Gowda. The case has since spiraled into a major controversy, putting one of Sandalwood’s biggest names under intense legal scrutiny.
The Supreme Court of India, on July 17, 2025, expressed serious reservations about how the Karnataka High Court granted bail to Darshan and other co-accused in the murder case. The top court observed that it was prima facie unconvinced with the High Court’s rationale and sought a detailed justification from senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who is representing Darshan.
A bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan remarked that the discretion exercised by the High Court raised legal concerns.

“To be very honest with you, we are not convinced by how the HC has exercised discretion,” Justice Pardiwala told Sibal, also noting the unusual manner in which the bail order was dictated.

The state of Karnataka has challenged the High Court’s decision in the apex court, seeking cancellation of Darshan’s bail, which was granted on December 13, 2024.
While defending the bail order, Sibal suggested that the court could review key witness statements under Sections 161 and 164 of the CrPC, including police testimonies. However, Justice Pardiwala maintained that the core issue lies in the language and reasoning used by the High Court in granting bail. The bench scheduled a further hearing on the matter for next Tuesday.
According to the Bengaluru Police, Darshan has been named as accused number 2 in the case, while Pavithra has been listed as accused number 1. Investigators allege that the offence was committed in retaliation for the messages Renukaswamy sent to Pavithra. The actor’s bail application was initially denied by a sessions court, before he moved to the High Court.
Despite the grim legal circumstances, Darshan remains one of Kannada cinema’s most bankable stars. Renowned for his towering height (6’3”), broad frame, and commanding voice, he has built a screen legacy characterized by larger-than-life roles, compelling action sequences, and impactful dialogue delivery.
Beyond acting, Darshan is a successful producer and distributor through his banner Thoogudeepa Productions. He is also involved in philanthropic efforts, particularly in the sphere of animal welfare, and enjoys a cult-like following, with fans known to bathe his posters in milk during film releases.
Lovingly referred to by fans as “D Boss” and the “Challenging Star”, Darshan’s popularity has been nurtured by a blend of screen charisma, commercial success, and deep-rooted cultural appeal. However, the ongoing legal battle threatens to cast a long shadow over his career.
As the case unfolds in the country’s highest court, all eyes remain on the legal arguments, the emerging evidence, and the implications it may hold, not just for Darshan but for the intersection of celebrity, crime, and accountability in Indian cinema.
