Suspected Antisemitic Arson Attack Destroys Four Hatzola Ambulances in North London, Sparks Concern Among Jewish Community
In an incident being widely described as a possible hate crime, four ambulances belonging to the Jewish volunteer emergency service organisation Hatzola were allegedly set on fire in North London, triggering alarm and anger among members of the local Jewish community.
The attack has raised serious concerns about rising antisemitic incidents and the safety of Jewish institutions and individuals in the United Kingdom.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred in a North London neighbourhood with a significant Jewish population.
Soon after receiving information about the fire, officers of the Metropolitan Police reached the spot and began a detailed investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the suspected arson.
Authorities have stated that although the act is being treated with utmost seriousness, no injuries have been reported so far.
The ambulances targeted in the attack belonged to Hatzola, a not-for-profit volunteer organisation that plays a crucial role in providing rapid medical assistance during emergencies, particularly within Jewish communities.
The organisation is widely respected for its prompt response services and for supplementing public healthcare systems by offering immediate medical support in urgent situations.
Upon receiving the alert, the London Fire Brigade deployed several fire engines and more than three dozen firefighters to control the blaze.
During the incident, oxygen cylinders and other medical equipment stored inside the ambulances reportedly exploded due to the intense heat, creating a dangerous situation for emergency responders.
Despite the explosions, authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries occurred.
UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “sickening” in a post shared on social media platform X.
He emphasised the importance of unity against hatred, stating that society must stand together to oppose antisemitism and all forms of discrimination targeting minority communities.
Security experts and community leaders have pointed to a noticeable increase in antisemitic incidents globally following the October 2023 attacks by Hamas in Israel, which led to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Mark Gardner, Chief Executive of the Community Security Trust — an organisation that advises Britain’s approximately 290,000 Jewish residents on security matters — noted that the North London incident bears resemblance to recent suspected anti-Jewish arson attacks reported in cities such as Liege, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
Reports indicate that the United Kingdom has witnessed a significant rise in antisemitic hate incidents since the escalation of tensions in West Asia.
Analysts say that Jewish institutions, religious centres and community organisations have been increasingly subjected to threats, vandalism and violence, prompting heightened security measures across several regions.
Observers recall that one of the most serious antisemitic attacks in Britain in recent years was the Manchester incident in which two Jewish worshippers lost their lives during Yom Kippur, considered the holiest day in the Jewish religious calendar.
That tragedy had already raised concerns about the growing risks faced by Jewish communities, and the latest North London arson has once again intensified calls for vigilance and stronger protection measures.
Investigations into the latest incident are ongoing, and authorities have assured the public that all efforts are being made to identify those responsible and ensure that appropriate legal action is taken.
