Tehran Hit by Massive Blasts as Israel Expands ‘Operation Roaring Lion’; Iran Vows Fierce Retaliation
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday released brief aerial footage on social platform X, showing what appeared to be a precision strike deep inside Tehran.
The 11-second clip, reportedly captured by a drone, accompanied a statement declaring that Israel’s ongoing campaign — dubbed “Operation Roaring Lion” — had entered a new phase.
In its post, the Israeli military said its air force was conducting large-scale operations aimed at securing air dominance over Iranian territory and striking installations associated with what it termed the “Iranian terror regime” in the capital’s core.
The message suggested that these operations were designed to open an aerial corridor toward Tehran and intensify pressure on Iran’s leadership.
Shortly after, a powerful explosion shook the Iranian capital. Witnesses described the ground trembling as a thick column of smoke rose over the central districts.
International media reports indicated that the blast appeared to originate from an area housing significant state infrastructure, including police headquarters and national broadcasting facilities.
The precise target, however, was not immediately confirmed.
The escalation follows the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in a coordinated Israeli-American strike on his office in Tehran a day earlier.
His death has sent shockwaves through the Islamic Republic, raising urgent questions about succession, governance, and regional stability.
Iran’s government swiftly condemned the attack, describing it as an unforgivable act and pledging retaliation.
The country’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that it was preparing what it called its most forceful counter-operation to date, targeting Israeli and American interests across the region.
In a nationally televised address, parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf declared that Israel and the United States had crossed a “red line” and would face severe consequences.
He warned of overwhelming reprisals that would compel adversaries to reconsider their actions.
On the other side, US President Donald Trump issued a stark caution via social media, signaling that any Iranian retaliation would be met with unprecedented force. His remarks underscored the volatility of the moment, as rhetoric on both sides intensified.
Further reports suggested that additional Israeli strikes targeted senior Iranian officials. One air raid allegedly hit a high-level defence council meeting, resulting in the deaths of Iran’s army chief of staff, defence minister, the head of the Revolutionary Guard, and a senior security adviser close to Khamenei.
If confirmed, these losses would represent one of the most significant decapitation blows to Iran’s military hierarchy in decades.
The rapid succession of strikes and counter-threats has heightened fears of a broader regional confrontation.
With Iran declaring national mourning and Israel asserting expanded operational objectives, the Middle East stands at a precarious crossroads.
Diplomatic channels appear strained, while military posturing grows more pronounced by the hour.
As global powers watch anxiously, the coming days may determine whether this crisis remains a high-intensity exchange or spirals into a wider conflict with far-reaching geopolitical consequences.
