In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and the public, television actor Ashish Kapoor has been arrested on charges of alleged rape.
The allegations stem from an incident during a house party in Delhi in the second week of August, where a woman accused him of sexual assault inside a washroom.
According to the Delhi Police, the victim initially reported that Kapoor, along with a friend who hosted the party and two unidentified men, had sexually assaulted her.
She also claimed that a woman, later identified as the wife of Kapoor’s friend, had physically attacked her. However, her statement evolved during the investigation, and she later asserted that Kapoor was the sole perpetrator of the rape.
Police officials have stated that while the initial FIR included charges of gangrape, they are following due legal procedures and will modify the charges to rape as the investigation progresses.
The investigation, led by DCP (North) Raja Banthia, involved tracking Kapoor’s movements from Delhi to Goa and subsequently to Pune, where he was ultimately apprehended on Wednesday. The victim and Kapoor had initially connected on Instagram, after which he invited her to the party where the alleged crime occurred.
A key point of contention is the victim’s claim that the incident was videographed. However, police have reported that their investigation has not yet uncovered any such evidence.
Further adding complexity to the case, CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts placed Kapoor and the victim together in the washroom for an extended period, prompting other guests to knock on the door.
This led to an argument that spilled out of the apartment and into the society complex, where the victim alleges she was assaulted by the host’s wife. Notably, it was the host’s wife who placed the PCR call to the police.
In a significant legal development, Kapoor’s friend and his wife were granted anticipatory bail on August 21. During the court hearing, the victim was present, but her submissions did not include allegations against the friend, creating a discrepancy with her earlier police statements.
This case highlights the immense challenges within the criminal justice system in handling sexual assault cases, particularly those involving influential figures.
