The Test He Never Took: Akshay Kumar’s Personal Loss Inspires a Powerful Mission to Raise Prostate Cancer Awareness

By Tanveer Zaidi

The morning sunlight entered the Mumbai apartment just as it had done for more than six decades—through the familiar windows, across the polished wooden floor, and onto the chair where he had always sat with his tea and newspaper.

But that morning, the chair remained empty. Hari Om Bhatia had passed away three days earlier, and his son stood silently by the window, looking out at the city he had once believed he had conquered, only to realise that some battles can never truly be won.

Akshay Kumar had spent most of his life preparing for physical challenges. His career had demanded discipline, relentless training, and the ability to endure pain.

From intense martial arts practice to high-risk stunts that left audiences stunned, he had conditioned himself to fall, rise, and keep moving forward.

Yet nothing in his years of preparation could equip him for the devastating moment when doctors delivered the diagnosis: metastatic prostate cancer—advanced and spreading.

His father never complained. That silence would later become one of Akshay’s deepest regrets. Hari Om Bhatia, a retired army officer, believed that pain should be endured quietly and that illness should not burden family members.

He ignored early symptoms—subtle discomfort, frequent urges, signs that something was wrong. By the time he sought medical help, the disease had progressed beyond the possibility of surgical treatment.

The following months became a blur of hospital visits, chemotherapy sessions, and fragile hope that fluctuated with every medical report.

Akshay found himself learning unfamiliar medical terms—PSA levels, Gleason score, metastasis. He began reading medical reports with the same focus he once reserved for film scripts, searching for a turning point, hoping for a hopeful resolution.

But real life, he realised, does not follow cinematic structure. Effort alone does not guarantee a happy ending.

He spent long nights sitting beside his father, holding the hand that had once guided him as a child.

The man who had instilled discipline in him, encouraged martial arts training during his formative years in Delhi, and quietly observed his son’s rise to stardom without fully understanding that the world was now growing weaker.

The once upright posture of a soldier gradually gave way to frailty. The commanding voice softened into a whisper.

During those nights, Akshay made a quiet promise to himself: he would not allow other families to experience such loss without awareness.

He would speak openly about the illness his father had chosen to endure in silence. He would use his public platform to communicate a message that could save lives.

The funeral was a private affair. The film industry expressed condolences, media outlets reported the loss, and public attention moved on.

But Akshay did not. Sitting in his father’s apartment, surrounded by reminders of a life lived with discipline—the medals, photographs, and walking stick that appeared in the final months—he began planning a meaningful response.

What followed was not a dramatic campaign or publicity event, but a steady and thoughtful effort to transform how men view their health.

In interviews, Akshay began speaking about prostate cancer not as a celebrity endorsing a cause, but as a son sharing a deeply personal experience.

He emphasised the importance of regular PSA screening—the simple test that might have detected the disease earlier in his father’s case.

He spoke about the silence that often surrounds men’s health concerns, the reluctance to discuss symptoms, and the consequences of delay.

“I lost the most important person in my life to prostate cancer,” he said in one interview. “If even one person decides to get tested after hearing this, my father’s loss will not be in vain.”

The response was significant. Messages arrived from across the country—from men who scheduled their first screening after hearing his appeal, from wives who convinced hesitant husbands to consult doctors, and from sons who encouraged their fathers to prioritise their health.

What began as a private commitment gradually evolved into a public awareness effort.

Despite continued professional commitments and film releases such as Ram Setu, Selfiee, and OMG 2, Akshay consistently redirected conversations toward the importance of early detection.

He stressed that true courage often lies not in dramatic acts, but in responsible decisions such as seeking medical advice and undergoing timely tests.

Statistics reinforced the urgency of his message. Medical studies suggest that approximately one in nine men may develop prostate cancer during their lifetime. Individuals with a family history face increased risk. When detected early, survival rates are extremely high.

However, delayed diagnosis significantly reduces treatment success. For Akshay, these figures were not mere data—they represented the difference between presence and absence, between life shared and life remembered.

Over the years, he has collaborated with healthcare organisations, supported awareness initiatives, and used his outreach to encourage preventive health behaviour.

Yet those close to him say his most meaningful advocacy occurs quietly—on film sets, among colleagues, and in personal conversations where he encourages others to take symptoms seriously.

During a recent film shoot, a long-time stunt coordinator approached him during a break.

The man, who had worked with Akshay for over two decades, had been experiencing symptoms but had postponed medical consultation due to fear. After hearing Akshay speak about his father’s experience, he finally underwent testing.

“It was detected early,” the coordinator said. “Doctors say I’ll recover.”

Akshay acknowledged the moment quietly—not as a cinematic hero, but as someone who understood the value of timely action.

He occasionally returns to his father’s apartment, preserved exactly as it once was—the chair near the window, the newspaper stand, the walking stick placed in the corner. Sitting there in the morning light, he reflects on conversations left incomplete and questions never asked.

Then he steps back into the world, continuing to share a message he believes can save lives.

He speaks to men taught to hide vulnerability, to families uncertain how to begin conversations about health, and to individuals who believe strength means silence.

He speaks because silence cost him his father. And he hopes that awareness will ensure fewer families face the same loss.
