Thousands of Patients Returned Without Treatment due to striking SRN Junior Doctors
PRAYAGRAJ: Protesting against the assault on Junior Resident Dr. Anurag Kumar of Motilal Nehru Medical College on Monday, doctors at SRN Hospital remained on strike for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. However, the strike was called off on Thursday.
As a result:
- Outpatient Department (OPD) services were suspended.
- New patients were not admitted.
- Diagnostic tests were halted.
- Prescriptions were not issued.
Due to the strike, nearly 2,500 patients who had come from distant areas were forced to return untreated, while around 60 scheduled surgeries were postponed. Critical patients had to be shifted to Bailey Hospital and Colvin Hospital.
Doctors Stage Dharna at Trauma Center
By 10 a.m., around 150 junior doctors gathered under the shed at the Trauma Center. They carried bedsheets and mattresses from hospital beds to sit on during the protest.
Holding placards, they raised slogans such as:
- “No Safety, No Duty”
- “Justice Delayed is Injustice”
During the demonstration, they also blocked the entrance of the Trauma Center with barricades.
As news of the strike spread, nearly 400 doctors from other departments also joined the protest, displaying solidarity and demanding the immediate arrest of the attackers.
Talks with Authorities
Around 12 noon, senior officials, including:
- ADM (City) Satyam Mishra
- DCP (City) Manish Shandilya
- Principal of Medical College, Dr. V.K. Pandey
- Dr. Amit Singh
reached the site to hold discussions with the agitating doctors.
ADM City assured the doctors that action against the accused would be taken by 6 p.m. Following this assurance, the protesting doctors dispersed from the dharna site around 1 p.m.
However, when the promised action did not materialize, the junior doctors resumed their sit-in outside the Trauma Center by 6:30 p.m.
The striking doctors reiterated their stand: Until the accused are arrested, the strike will continue.”
Three Arrested
Later, the police confirmed the arrest of three individuals, including the main accused, in connection with the assault on Dr. Anurag.
