Tragedy in Doda: 10 Army Personnel Killed as Vehicle Plunges into Gorge in Jammu and Kashmir
At least ten Indian Army personnel lost their lives in a tragic road accident on Thursday in Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir, triggering an outpouring of grief and condolences from across the Union Territory and the country.
Confirming the incident, Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives.
In a message posted on X, he said he was “deeply saddened by the loss of lives of 10 of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate road accident in Doda.”
“We will always remember the outstanding service and supreme sacrifice of our brave soldiers. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” the Lt Governor added.
Accident on Mountainous Interstate Road
The accident occurred at Khanni Top near Thananala, around 20 kilometres ahead of Bhaderwah, on the Bhaderwah–Chamba interstate road—an area known for its steep gradients and sharp curves.
According to officials, the bulletproof Army vehicle was carrying a total of 17 personnel and was on its way to a high-altitude forward post.
While navigating the treacherous stretch, the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to plunge nearly 200 feet into a deep gorge.
Immediate Rescue Operation Launched
Soon after the accident, a joint rescue operation was launched by the Indian Army and local police teams.
Given the difficult terrain and depth of the gorge, rescue efforts were challenging and required coordinated ground action.
Several injured soldiers were pulled out from the wreckage and immediately airlifted to the military hospital in Udhampur for specialised medical treatment.
Officials said efforts were made to provide the fastest possible evacuation to save lives.
Nation Mourns the Loss
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by armed forces personnel even outside active combat zones, particularly while operating in high-altitude and mountainous regions.
Senior civil and military officials are closely monitoring the situation, while further details regarding the condition of the injured soldiers are awaited.
The Army has also initiated an internal inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
