Trump Holds Off Military Strike on Iran as Tehran Signals Openness to Talks; Tensions Still High
Washington / Tehran | US President Donald Trump has temporarily shelved plans for immediate military action against Iran, according to the White House, after Tehran reportedly sent confidential communications indicating it may be willing to engage in dialogue to defuse the escalating crisis.
This development comes amid one of the most intense periods in Iran’s recent history, as nationwide protests have rocked the country for more than two weeks, prompting a severe crackdown by Iranian authorities.
Trump: No Immediate Military Action, But Pressure Remains
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump acknowledged that communications with Iranian officials remain open, even as he weighed how best to respond to the situation inside Iran.
He reiterated that the United States has not ruled out action entirely, saying that “if the situation in Iran does not improve, strong steps may still be taken before any scheduled meeting.”
However, he confirmed that military action has been postponed for now.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that the President is “paying close attention to the messages received from Iran,” noting that Tehran’s quiet diplomatic signals differ sharply from its public rhetoric.
Iran Remains Defiant, but Talks Continue
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that communications with the United States are ongoing, particularly between him and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. He stressed that Tehran remains prepared for any eventuality.
At the same time, Araghchi made it clear that while Iran is open to discussions, it rejects threats and coercion, asserting that Washington’s suggestions and warnings are unjustified.
Wider Context: Unrest and Regional Risks
The current wave of unrest in Iran began over economic grievances and rapidly expanded into broader political protests challenging the ruling establishment.
Casualties have been reported amid clashes between protesters and security forces, though precise figures remain unclear due to restrictions on information flow.
Against this backdrop, tensions remain high across the region, with concerns that any military escalation could draw in neighbouring countries and destabilise West Asia further.
Diplomatic Channels Still Active
Despite sharp rhetoric on both sides, diplomatic channels have not been closed.
Quiet exchanges through envoys and intermediaries continue, suggesting that both Washington and Tehran are keeping the door open for dialogue—even as mistrust and pressure persist.
