Trump Predicts Imminent Collapse of Cuban Government as US Investigates Communist Leadership
US President Donald Trump has suggested that Cuba’s communist administration could soon lose its grip on power, while American legal authorities explore potential criminal proceedings against figures within the island’s ruling establishment.
During a telephone conversation with CNN, Trump indicated that the Cuban leadership is facing mounting pressure and hinted that political change on the island might occur in the near future.
He remarked that the Cuban government was eager to reach an agreement with Washington and insisted that Havana “desperately wants to strike a deal” with the United States.
The president’s remarks echoed statements he delivered earlier in the week at the White House, where he again suggested that Cuban authorities were interested in initiating discussions with the US government.
Speaking with CNN journalist Dana Bash, Trump also pointed to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio as a central figure who would manage the situation.
Rubio has deep personal ties to Cuba, as his family left the island during the era of former leader Fulgencio Batista.
Trump said the United States was in no hurry but believed Cuba had reached a moment of readiness for change after decades of strained relations with Washington.
Meanwhile, the Caribbean nation has been grappling with an acute energy crisis over the past several months.
The difficulties intensified after the United States took steps to disrupt oil deliveries associated with Venezuela, one of Cuba’s primary fuel providers.
The shortage of fuel has resulted in widespread electricity disruptions, leaving many regions of the country without power for extended periods.
Alongside the economic turmoil, American prosecutors in Florida have reportedly begun reviewing possible legal actions against members of Cuba’s governing elite.
Jason Reding Quiñones, the US attorney for the Southern District of Florida, has assembled a specialised team of federal prosecutors and investigators to determine whether officials connected to Cuba’s government or its Communist Party may have violated American laws.
According to individuals familiar with the initiative, the task force includes representatives from multiple federal agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration.
These sources spoke anonymously because they were not authorised to publicly discuss the investigation.
At present, authorities have not disclosed which Cuban officials might be under examination or what specific allegations investigators could pursue.
A spokesperson for the US Justice Department said federal attorneys routinely pursue justice in matters that involve international crime networks and activities that cross national borders.
The reported probe coincides with Trump’s increasingly hardline rhetoric toward Cuba’s ruling establishment and his suggestions that Washington could play a larger role in shaping the island’s political future.
