Trump Softens Stance on India After Steep Tariffs, Signals Fresh Trade Talks

In a dramatic turn of events, just weeks after slapping 50% tariffs on Indian goods, US President Donald Trump has hinted at a softer approach towards India, acknowledging that prolonged trade strain would only hurt consumers and the US economy.

Taking to his social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump revealed that both nations are back at the negotiation table to resolve trade disputes.

His post comes as a clear sign that Washington recognizes the risks of escalating tensions with New Delhi — higher prices for American consumers, disruption of supply chains, and potential losses to the US exchequer.

“I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the trade barriers between our two Nations.

I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks. I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries!” Trump wrote.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, quick to respond on X (formerly Twitter), welcomed the move and emphasized the strength of the bilateral relationship.

India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership.

Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people,” Modi posted.

This sudden shift in Trump’s stance highlights a practical realization: that decoupling or hardening trade barriers with India is neither sustainable nor beneficial. Instead, cooperation with one of the world’s fastest-growing economies could bring mutual prosperity, making the trade partnership indispensable in the evolving global order.
