Trump Warns of 50% Tariff on Canadian Aircraft Amid Escalating Trade Tensions
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, on Thursday issued a strong warning that aircraft manufactured in Canada and sold in the US could soon face a steep 50 percent tariff.
Trump said the move would be in response to Canada’s refusal to certify jet aircraft produced by Gulfstream Aerospace, based in Georgia.
He further claimed that the US would cancel the certification of all Canadian-made aircraft, including those produced by Bombardier.
“If the situation does not improve, I will impose a 50 percent duty on any aircraft coming from Canada and sold in the United States,” Trump warned.
Earlier Threat of 100% Tariff
The latest statement comes amid a growing dispute between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Previously, Trump had also threatened to impose a massive 100 percent tariff on Canadian imports if Canada proceeded with a trade agreement with China. However, he did not specify when such duties would be implemented, especially since Canada had already finalized a deal.
Significant Impact on the US Aviation Sector
Data shows that more than 150 Bombardier Global Express aircraft are currently registered in the United States and operated by over 100 different operators.
If Trump’s proposed measures come into effect, they could have a direct and serious impact on the US aviation industry, particularly private jet owners and operators.
Responding to the warning, Bombardier stated that all of its aircraft fully comply with the standards set by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The company emphasized that thousands of Canadian aircraft safely operate in US airspace every day and cautioned that such a decision could disrupt air travel and create significant challenges for both passengers and air traffic systems.
Tariff Threats Extend to Allies
Trump’s aggressive trade stance has not been limited to Canada alone. In recent months, he has also threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on several European nations, including Denmark, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.
Neighboring Mexico has also been warned of potential tariff measures.
