Two Tamil Nadu Cops Arrested And Dismissed From Service For The Abduction And Rape Of A 19 Year Old Girl
In a deeply disturbing incident that has shaken the faith in law enforcement, two police constables from Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai East Police Station were arrested and subsequently dismissed from service for the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh.
The incident occurred on the night of September 30, 2025, near the Endal bypass road in Tiruvannamalai, a town renowned for its spiritual significance and the Arunachaleswarar Temple.
The Incident
The survivor, along with her mother, had traveled from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh to sell fruits in Tiruvannamalai. While en route to the temple, their vehicle was intercepted by Constables D. Sureshraj and P. Sundar, who were on night patrol. The officers allegedly ordered the women to step out for a routine vehicle check.
Subsequently, they are reported to have forcibly separated the younger woman from her mother, dragging her to a secluded grove where the assault occurred in the presence of her mother.
The constables abandoned the women by the roadside around 4 a.m. the following day. Nearby workers discovered them and alerted the authorities.
The survivor was taken to the Tiruvannamalai Government General Hospital, where medical examinations confirmed the assault.
A case of abduction and gang rape was registered at the Tiruvannamalai All Women Police Station. The accused constables were arrested shortly thereafter.
Swift Action and Dismissal
In an unprecedented move, the Tamil Nadu government dismissed the two constables from service without a formal inquiry, invoking Article 311(3) of the Indian Constitution.
This provision allows for dismissal if conducting an inquiry is deemed against the public interest. The dismissal was executed on October 2, 2025, underscoring the state’s zero-tolerance policy towards such heinous crimes, especially when committed by law enforcement personnel.
Political and Public Outrage
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the political spectrum. Edappadi K. Palaniswami, leader of the opposition AIADMK, condemned the act as a severe breakdown in women’s safety, highlighting the betrayal of public trust by the very individuals entrusted with protection.
Similarly, K. Annamalai, former BJP chief of Tamil Nadu, criticized the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, attributing the incident to systemic failures.
Ongoing Developments
As of now, the survivor has returned to her native place in Andhra Pradesh after receiving medical treatment. The Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women has assured that compensation will be provided within ten days.
The case continues to draw attention to the urgent need for reforms in police accountability and women’s safety measures.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities women face, even at the hands of those sworn to protect them. It calls for a collective introspection and a renewed commitment to ensuring justice and safety for all citizens.
