The Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on Tuesday said that the democracy was damaged most in the year 1975 when the emergency was promulgated by the then government in the country, but this year will also be remembered for the strength of Constitution shown by Justice Jagmohan Lal Sinha, who declared the election of the then PM Indira Gandhi as illegal. The minister also recalled Justice HR Khanna for strengthening the Constitution by giving dissenting judgments in human rights cases.
Meghwal was speaking as the chief guest in the second regional event on the Hamara Samvidhan Hamara Samman Campaign (Our Constitution, Our Dignity Campaign) on Tuesday at Allahabad Medical Association convention center, Stanley Road, Prayagraj.
This program is being organized by the Department of Justice, the Ministry of Law and Justice, and the government of India as a part of a campaign to commemorate the 75th year of the Indian Republic.
Lauding the Constitution, Meghwal said that democracy in our country remained saved due to our Constitution. He further emphasized that the concept of equality was first adopted in the constitution under Article 14 by Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar. He said that if we save our constitution, we will help to give rise to brotherhood in society.
Lauding the city of Prayagraj, which is known as Triveni, the confluence of three holy rivers, the minister equated it with our Constitution, which is also a confluence of three organs of democracy – legislature, executive, and judiciary.
