UP CM Yogi Adityanath Announces Scholarship in Honor of Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, First Indian to Travel to ISS
Lucknow: In a landmark announcement that underscores Uttar Pradesh’s growing role in India’s space ambitions, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday declared the launch of a scholarship program named after Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS).
The scholarship aims to support meritorious students from the state pursuing advanced studies and research in space technology and allied fields.
The declaration was made during a special felicitation ceremony organized in Lucknow to honor Shukla, who recently returned from the historic Axiom-4 mission, marking a new milestone in India’s space exploration journey.
A Tribute to a Trailblazer
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Minister highlighted Shukla’s achievement as a source of immense pride for Uttar Pradesh. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is not only the first astronaut from our state but also a symbol of India’s growing excellence in space research.
To honor his contributions, we are introducing a scholarship in his name for students aspiring to make their mark in space technology,” Adityanath announced.
Rapid Growth in Space Education in UP
CM Adityanath emphasized the remarkable progress of Uttar Pradesh in space education over the past few years.
“Four years ago, not a single university or institute in Uttar Pradesh offered a degree or specialization in space technology,” he said.
“Today, premier institutions such as Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT) in Gorakhpur, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) in Lucknow, and more than a dozen technical colleges are actively offering specialized courses.
This reflects our state’s determination to contribute to India’s growth story in science and technology.”
Vision for a Developed India by 2047
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of nurturing talent in emerging scientific sectors to achieve the national vision of a developed India by 2047.
He expressed the state government’s readiness to collaborate with ISRO and other national and international space agencies to create a vibrant ecosystem for research, innovation, and exploration in Uttar Pradesh.
Astronaut Shukla’s Achievements
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s 18-day mission aboard the ISS was a landmark achievement for India’s space research community.
During his stay, he participated in over 60 scientific experiments, several of which were designed by Indian scientists. His work ranged from space medicine research to microgravity studies and advanced material sciences, helping place India firmly on the global space innovation map.
A Moment of Pride for Uttar Pradesh
Shukla also called on CM Yogi Adityanath at his official residence in Lucknow, where the two discussed ways to encourage youth participation in space exploration. The CM lauded Shukla’s achievements as a “historic moment” that would inspire generations of students and researchers.
With this scholarship initiative, Uttar Pradesh aims to empower a new generation of scientists and engineers, helping the state emerge as a major hub for aerospace research and development.
