UP Government Cracks Down on Misinformation About Maha Kumbh 2025, Identifies 14 X Accounts
To combat misinformation and rumors surrounding Maha Kumbh 2025, the Yogi Adityanath government has taken action against 14 X (formerly Twitter) accounts accused of spreading false narratives. Following directives from Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prashant Kumar, social media platforms are being closely monitored, and offenders are facing legal consequences.
During surveillance, authorities discovered that certain X accounts had shared an old video from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, falsely associating it with the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh. The misleading posts alleged that police under the Yogi Adityanath government had brutally beaten devotees searching for missing relatives at the event.
Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the video originated from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, where local police conducted a lathi charge on January 1, 2025. The Kumbh Mela police clarified the misinformation through their official social media account, refuting any connection between the video and Maha Kumbh 2025.
The administration labeled the incident as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the state government and police while inciting public unrest. An FIR has been registered at Kotwali Kumbh Mela, and legal proceedings have begun against the identified accounts.
