Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh – In a significant development with national and international implications, the Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday announced the unearthing of what they described as a large-scale illegal religious conversion and radicalization syndicate.
As part of an extensive operation, authorities have arrested 10 individuals spread across six different states, all allegedly linked to the same organized racket.

The investigation, which initially began in Agra in March, was sparked by the disappearance of two sisters, aged 33 and 18, whose sudden absence raised alarm bells among their family members.
Upon further inquiry, the police uncovered disturbing revelations: the sisters were allegedly being coerced into religious conversion and had reportedly begun the process of radicalization.

Online Radicalization Triggers Deeper Probe
Adding to the concerns, one of the sisters had reportedly changed her social media profile picture to an image of a girl brandishing an AK-47 assault rifle, a move that intensified suspicions about potential links to extremist ideologies.
This digital footprint prompted cyber-surveillance teams to dig deeper, eventually exposing a broader web of operations.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that the two women were being targeted by a well-organized network involved in what can be described as ‘love jihad’ and radical indoctrination,” said Agra Commissioner of Police Deepak Kumar.
He added that further analysis of communication and financial records revealed possible foreign funding sources allegedly tied to entities based in the United States and Canada.

Multi-State Operation Unravels Network
In the wake of these findings, the Agra police, with support from central agencies, launched a coordinated crackdown. The operation led to the arrest of ten individuals, each suspected of playing specific roles in the syndicate’s activities. The arrests were made in the following states:
-
Rajasthan – 3 arrested
-
Uttar Pradesh – 2 arrested
-
West Bengal – 2 arrested
-
Goa – 1 arrested
-
Uttarakhand – 1 arrested
-
Delhi – 1 arrested
Each of these individuals allegedly contributed to different components of the network, which, according to authorities, was meticulously structured and operated covertly.

“The gang’s modus operandi was alarmingly sophisticated,” Commissioner Kumar stated.
“Some members were tasked with receiving illicit foreign funds, others provided safe houses, while some offered legal and logistical support to those undergoing radicalization or conversion.”
The Commissioner went on to describe the operation as bearing the signature of ISIS-like tactics, referring to the use of covert cells, encrypted communication, and international financial channels allegedly routed through the dark web and underground networks.

Special Forces Deployed: Mission Asmita in Focus
Acknowledging the serious threat to national security, the Uttar Pradesh government has directed its elite law enforcement arms—the Special Task Force (STF) and Anti-Terror Squad (ATS)—to take over the detailed probe and assist local police forces.

This operation has been conducted under the banner of ‘Mission Asmita’, a focused state-level initiative aimed at exposing and neutralizing networks involved in illegal conversions, radical influence operations, and foreign-backed ideological subversion.
“Mission Asmita is not just a policing operation—it is a defense mechanism against ideological threats and foreign interference in India’s social and religious fabric,” said Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna.
