Lucknow: In a further developing step towards cleaner and more efficient public transportation, Uttar Pradesh is gearing up to launch its first-ever intercity electric double-decker bus service, beginning with the high-traffic Lucknow–Gorakhpur route.

Operated by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), this initiative marks a major milestone in the state’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions and eco-friendly travel options.

A First for Intercity Electric Double-Deckers

Although electric double-decker buses are already a familiar sight within Lucknow’s urban boundaries—primarily used for local intra-city commuting—this will be the first time such vehicles are deployed for long-distance intercity travel in the state.

The move is being seen as a pilot project to assess the feasibility of expanding electric mobility across major routes in Uttar Pradesh.

Phase One to Introduce 20 High-Capacity Buses

In the initial phase of implementation, UPSRTC plans to procure 20 electric double-decker buses, a fleet that will lay the foundation for future expansion.

Of these, four buses have been earmarked for operations along the Gorakhpur–Lucknow corridor, a route known for its high passenger load and regular traffic.

These double-decker buses are designed to accommodate 65 passengers, offering a significant improvement over the standard 52-seat single-deck buses currently in operation.

The increased seating capacity is expected to meet growing demand, especially during peak hours and holiday seasons when passenger volume spikes.

Efficient Range and Charging Infrastructure

One of the key features of these electric buses is their extended range—each bus will be capable of traveling between 150 and 200 kilometers on a single full charge, which is sufficient to cover the entire Lucknow to Gorakhpur route without requiring mid-journey recharging.

To ensure uninterrupted service and operational efficiency, the state government will be setting up dedicated electric charging stations along the route.

These stations will serve as hubs not only for recharging but also for routine maintenance and system checks, making sure that the service runs seamlessly and reliably.

Environment-Friendly and Economical

Beyond environmental benefits, the move is expected to yield significant cost savings for the transport corporation. Electric buses have lower operating and maintenance costs when compared to conventional diesel buses.

These savings could be passed on to the passengers in the form of reduced ticket fares, making intercity travel not only cleaner but also more affordable and accessible to daily commuters and occasional travelers alike.

According to a regional manager of UPSRTC, the procurement process is already in motion, and operational trials will begin soon. Once testing is complete and the necessary infrastructure is in place, the buses will be rolled out for public use.

Transforming Public Transport in UP

This initiative aligns with broader efforts under the state government’s green mobility mission, which aims to phase out fossil fuel-based transportation and transition to electric and hybrid systems in the coming years.

If successful, the model could be extended to other high-density routes such as Lucknow–Varanasi, Kanpur–Agra, and Prayagraj–Noida, gradually transforming how millions of people travel across the state.

In addition to promoting environmental sustainability, the project demonstrates Uttar Pradesh’s growing emphasis on innovation in public services, combining smart technology with public welfare.

As the buses prepare to hit the road, commuters can look forward to a cleaner, quieter, and more efficient travel experience that sets a benchmark for other states to follow.
