US Braces for Prolonged Iran Campaign as Casualties Mount and Tensions Escalate

Soon after disclosing the first American combat fatalities in the intensifying military campaign against Iran, the United States has signalled that further losses may be inevitable, with no immediate conclusion to hostilities on the horizon.

At a Pentagon media briefing on Monday, senior defence officials confirmed that four US service members have been killed in action during ongoing operations.

Even as the nation mourns, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine cautioned that the mission remains complex and far from complete.

“This is not a swift, overnight strike,” Caine stated, emphasising that the objectives assigned to US Central Command (CENTCOM) and allied forces would require sustained effort, resilience, and what he described as “hard and gritty work.”

He acknowledged that additional casualties are anticipated, while reaffirming that every measure would be taken to limit American losses.

President Donald Trump has projected that the operation could extend for approximately four weeks, underscoring the scale and seriousness of the campaign.

Addressing reporters, Secretary of War and Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth spoke about the incident in which American troops lost their lives, noting that one more soldier succumbed to injuries, raising the death toll to four.

He highlighted the formidable air defence systems in place but admitted that, on rare occasions, a hostile projectile can penetrate protective layers.

“From time to time, a round may slip through — what we call a ‘squirter’ — and in this case, it struck a fortified tactical operations centre.

These are immensely powerful weapons,” Hegseth explained. He added that the tragedy would only strengthen the resolve of US forces to carry out their mission with precision and honour, while ensuring care for the families of the fallen.

In a separate development on Monday, three US F-15 fighter aircraft were reportedly downed by Kuwaiti air defence systems in what is being investigated as a friendly fire episode.

All six crew members successfully ejected and are undergoing medical evaluations. US CENTCOM confirmed that the matter is under review and that further details will be disclosed once available.

Later, in remarks to the New York Post, President Trump declined to categorically dismiss the possibility of deploying ground troops in Iran.

“I don’t make sweeping promises about no boots on the ground,” he said. “I’ll say we probably won’t need them — unless circumstances demand it.”

During the Pentagon address, Hegseth stressed that the campaign carries a “clear, crushing and decisive mandate” — to dismantle Iran’s missile capabilities, neutralise naval threats, and ensure the elimination of any nuclear ambitions.

“This is not Iraq. This is not an endless conflict,” he declared. “It is not a regime change war — though the regime itself has certainly shifted, and the world stands safer because of it.”

As the conflict unfolds with intensity and uncertainty, Washington signals both determination and vigilance, preparing for a campaign that could redefine the strategic balance in the region.
