US Steps Up Military Pressure on Iran, Sends Warships as Tensions Rise; Turkey Moves In to Mediate
Tensions between the United States and Iran are rising fast, with Washington increasing military pressure by sending several powerful warships toward the region.
While both sides are exchanging sharp statements, the growing US military presence signals that the situation could turn serious at any moment.
US President Donald Trump has reportedly been preparing for a possible new strike on Iran.
To ease the growing tension, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is travelling to Turkey to hold talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Fidan made it clear that attacking Iran would be a mistake.
“It is wrong to attack Iran. It is wrong to start another war. Iran is ready to negotiate on the nuclear issue,” he said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also tried to calm the crisis by suggesting a video meeting between Trump and Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi.
It is important to note that the US and Iran have not held direct formal talks for more than ten years.
Earlier this month, Trump publicly urged Iran to strike a nuclear deal. He warned that any future attack would be much harsher.
At the same time, he ordered a large fleet of US warships to move toward Iran, showing clear military pressure.
While speaking at the Kennedy Centre, Trump said the US has “very big, powerful ships” heading toward Iran and added that he hopes they won’t have to be used.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also confirmed that American forces are ready to act if Trump gives military orders.
“Iran should not pursue nuclear weapons. We are prepared to do whatever the President directs,” he said.
On the other side, Iran is also strengthening its defences.
Iran’s Army Chief Major General Amir Hatami said that after last year’s 12-day conflict in June, Iran has changed its military strategy.
The country has now developed around 1,000 sea-based and land-based drones. Along with its large stock of ballistic missiles, Iran believes it is better prepared for any US attack.
According to Reuters, Turkey may tell Iran that its peace and stability are extremely important to Ankara.
While Russia has urged both countries to stick to diplomacy, Turkey appears to be taking on the role of mediator. Officials fear that any US strike on Iran could quickly turn into a wider regional war.
Earlier this month, Iran also faced internal unrest, as the government cracked down heavily on protests, leading to thousands being killed or arrested.
Turkey, a NATO member and Iran’s neighbour, has made it clear it will oppose any foreign military intervention.
Ankara has asked the US to address its problems with Iran through dialogue rather than force.
As US warships move closer and pressure mounts, the region is watching closely to see whether diplomacy can prevent another major conflict.
