US Urges Citizens to Exit Iran Immediately Amid Rising Security Concerns
The Virtual U.S. Embassy in Iran has issued an urgent advisory calling on American citizens to leave Iran without delay, warning of growing security threats and deteriorating conditions.
The alert comes as the United States and Iran prepare for talks in Oman focused on Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security issues.
According to the advisory, the risk environment in Iran is worsening, with concerns over possible communication shutdowns, transportation disruptions, and an increased likelihood of questioning or detention.
US authorities cautioned that, in the event of a crisis, they may be unable to assist citizens inside the country.
In a Level 4: Do Not Travel notice, the U.S. Department of State said Americans in Iran face serious dangers, including terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest, and wrongful detention.
“US citizens in Iran should leave immediately,” the department said, stressing that it cannot provide normal consular services there.
The State Department underlined that the US has no embassy or consulate in Iran, which severely restricts its ability to respond during emergencies.
While the Switzerland represents US interests in Iran as a protecting power, its role is limited to basic emergency assistance. Routine services such as passport renewals or notarial work are no longer available.
Americans have also been advised not to count onthe US government’s help if the situation deteriorates further. The advisory urged citizens to prepare independent exit plans that do not rely on official assistance.
Particular concern was expressed over the risk of wrongful detention by Iranian authorities, especially for dual US-Iranian nationals.
“Possessing a US passport or having links to the United States may be sufficient grounds for detention,” the department warned.
It noted that some Americans have been held for years on charges such as espionage, often with minimal access to legal representation.
The warning underscores Washington’s assessment that conditions in Iran remain highly volatile and unsafe for US citizens.
