Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has cautioned young women to steer clear of live-in relationships, highlighting the potential social consequences of such arrangements.

She made these remarks while addressing students at the convocation ceremony of Jananayak Chandrashekhar University in Ballia district on Tuesday.

Addressing the graduates, Patel remarked that young women often face societal and personal challenges when engaging in live-in relationships.

She urged them to witness the realities firsthand, stating: My one advice to daughters is this: when someone approaches you seeking friendship, remember that today’s trend is live-in relationships. What is a live-in relationship?

Go and see for yourself. Visit orphanages. See the consequences of live-in relationships…You will find young girls, 15 or 20 years old, standing there with babies just one year old in their arms.”

Patel emphasized that in such situations, neither parents nor in-laws are likely to provide support, underscoring the importance of making responsible personal choices.

She further encouraged students to channel their energies toward meaningful and purposeful endeavors, rather than pursuing fleeting relationships that may have long-term implications.

Convocation Highlights and Academic Focus

According to information released by Raj Bhavan, Governor Patel, who also serves as the chancellor of state universities, conferred 19,560 degrees during the ceremony.

Out of these, 12,143 degrees were awarded to women and 7,417 to men. Among 44 gold medals distributed, women received 35, highlighting their academic excellence.

The Governor also addressed broader concerns affecting youth today. Expressing alarm over rising drug use, she noted that while the Central government runs anti-drug campaigns, many young people continue to fall under the influence of narcotics.

Patel further urged students to maintain at least 75 percent attendance in classes, warning that failure to meet this benchmark could lead to cancellation of examinations.

She stressed the need for creating a more effective and research-oriented teaching environment, encouraging educators to foster research-based studies.

The Governor lauded the state government’s continuous efforts to promote academic research and called upon universities to remain proactive in cultivating a culture of innovation and inquiry.

Governor Patel’s address was a mix of social caution, academic encouragement, and ethical guidance, aimed at shaping responsible, focused, and socially aware graduates.
