LUCKNOW: In a landmark initiative aimed at empowering artisans, craftsmen, and local entrepreneurs, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced that “Swadeshi Melas” will be organized across all 75 districts of the state ahead of Diwali this year.
The move is expected to provide a massive boost to indigenous industries, strengthen the local economy, and reduce dependence on foreign goods.
MSME Minister Rakesh Sachan stated that each trade fair will run for 9 to 10 days and will be organized under the banner of the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show (UPITS) with the theme of “Swadeshi Mela.”
This initiative directly aligns with the “Vocal for Local” call championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, aiming to promote locally-made products while providing artisans with a direct platform to reach consumers.
He added, “Earlier, such fairs were limited to only 18 districts. Expanding the initiative to all 75 districts will allow artisans and handicraft entrepreneurs to access a far larger marketplace, connect directly with buyers, and showcase the rich cultural and craft heritage of their regions.
In addition to traditional crafts, the fairs will also ensure that consumers benefit from GST reforms, making quality indigenous products more affordable.”
Direct Impact on Local Economy and Consumers
The fairs will be inaugurated by ministers and MLAs in their respective districts, with a strong focus on highlighting homegrown products over imported alternatives.
By encouraging citizens to choose local goods, the initiative aims to circulate wealth within the state, enhance artisans’ incomes, and promote durable, high-quality products.
Experts believe that such efforts are critical for long-term economic self-reliance and sustainable growth, creating a win-win scenario for producers and consumers alike.
Future Plans: Scaling Up UPITS and Unity Malls
Minister Sachan also noted that the third edition of UPITS 2025 concluded successfully, and the fourth edition is scheduled from September 25 to 29, 2026, on a much grander scale. Lessons learned from the previous edition will be applied to make the upcoming fair even more impactful and inclusive.
In addition to trade fairs, the state is working on infrastructure development to support local businesses. Construction of three Unity Malls in Lucknow, Varanasi, and Agra has begun with central government funding, with land already identified and foundation stones laid at several sites.
The long-term vision is to establish Unity Malls in all 75 districts, creating a permanent platform for indigenous goods. These malls will showcase unique local products from each district as well as One District One Product (ODOP) items from other states, providing consumers with a comprehensive marketplace for high-quality, homegrown products.
By promoting Swadeshi products, the government is sending a clear message: it is time to prioritize domestic craftsmanship, support our artisans, and reduce dependence on foreign goods. This initiative is expected to uplift the local economy, strengthen community livelihoods, and contribute meaningfully to India’s overall growth and self-reliance.
