Visits by Prime Minister and Union Ministers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally visited AIIMS to check on the health of Vice President Dhankhar and to extend his prayers for a speedy recovery. Expressing his concern, PM Modi took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts. In his post, he stated, “Went to AIIMS and enquired about the health of Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji. I pray for his good health and speedy recovery.”

In addition to the Prime Minister, Union Health Minister JP Nadda also visited the hospital to check on the Vice President’s condition. He interacted with the medical team to get updates on Dhankhar’s health and was assured that all necessary medical assistance would be provided.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, who currently serves as the 14th Vice President of India, assumed office on August 11, 2022. Born on July 18, 1951, in Kalibanga, a town in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh district, he has had an illustrious career spanning law, politics, and public service. He is affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has played a significant role in Indian politics over the decades.

Before assuming the office of Vice President, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal. His tenure as Governor was marked by several notable political developments and interactions with the state government. Dhankhar’s academic background includes a law degree from Punjab University, and he has been widely recognized for his legal expertise. Over the years, he has gained prominence as a seasoned lawyer, a dedicated social worker, and a politician committed to public welfare.

Jagdeep Dhankhar has had a dynamic political journey, having been associated with multiple political parties before solidifying his position within the BJP. He initially entered politics as a member of the Janata Dal and successfully contested the 1989 general elections, representing the Jhunjhunu Lok Sabha constituency in Rajasthan during the 9th Lok Sabha (1989–1991).

In 1991, Dhankhar shifted his allegiance to the Indian National Congress (INC) and contested the general elections from the Ajmer Lok Sabha constituency. However, he faced defeat in that election. Despite the setback, he remained active in politics and went on to serve as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Rajasthan’s 10th Legislative Assembly from 1993 to 1998, representing the Kishangarh assembly seat.

In 1998, he once again contested the Lok Sabha elections from Jhunjhunu but was unsuccessful, securing the third position in the race. Undeterred by these electoral losses, Dhankhar continued his engagement with politics and, in 2003, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where he gradually gained prominence. His role in the BJP expanded over the years, and he played an integral part in the 2008 Rajasthan Assembly elections as a member of the party’s election campaign committee.

Key Roles in the BJP and Appointment as Governor

Over time, Dhankhar’s association with the BJP deepened, and he took on significant responsibilities within the party. In 2016, he was appointed as the head of the BJP’s Department of Legal and Legislative Affairs, reflecting his expertise in legal and constitutional matters. His growing influence within the party eventually led to his appointment as the Governor of West Bengal on July 20, 2019, by the then-president of India, Ram Nath Kovind.

As Governor of West Bengal, Dhankhar frequently made headlines for his interactions with the state government and his vocal stance on various issues. His tenure was characterized by several political and administrative discussions, making him a key figure in national politics. His extensive experience in governance and legal matters eventually paved the way for his elevation to the position of Vice President of India in 2022.

Current Health Monitoring and Future Updates

As Vice President Dhankhar remains under observation at AIIMS, updates on his health will continue to be closely followed by political leaders, medical professionals, and the general public. His hospitalization has drawn widespread attention, with political leaders across party lines extending their wishes for his speedy recovery. The medical team at AIIMS is expected to provide regular health bulletins to keep the nation informed about his condition.

The government and the BJP leadership are ensuring that the best possible medical care is extended to the Vice President. Given his extensive contributions to Indian politics and governance, his well-being remains a matter of national concern.
