The pradhan of a village in Bhadohi district has been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a 67-year-old businessman who died in a hit-and-run incident that police now believe was a targeted attack.
The victim, Kamal Kant, a resident of Dhaskari village, had recently filed complaints accusing the pradhan and several of his associates of corruption and misconduct.
According to the police, acting on the victim’s formal complaint, the District Magistrate of Bhadohi had initiated an inquiry and subsequently suspended the pradhan’s financial powers.
This administrative action reportedly heightened tensions between the parties.
Bhadohi Circle Officer Ashok Kumar Mishra confirmed that, along with the pradhan, two of his relatives — Manish Yadav (35) and his uncle Mehilal Yadav (35) — have been taken into custody.
However, two more accused individuals remain on the run: Manish’s nephew Sujit Yadav (son of Mehilal), who is believed to be the owner of the vehicle involved in the incident, and another uncle, Munnalal Yadav. Police teams are conducting raids to trace both absconding suspects.
A case has been registered under charges of murder and criminal conspiracy, indicating that investigators suspect deliberate planning behind the fatal attack.
The Incident
The fatal incident occurred on the evening of December 10, when Kant was returning home after closing his shop.
Police received information that he had been hit from behind by a speeding car, whose driver fled the scene immediately afterward.
The injured businessman was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Investigation Findings
Police officers reached the spot promptly and collected CCTV footage from nearby areas. They also recorded statements from residents familiar with the strained relationship between the deceased and the village pradhan.
During the inquiry, police found that the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run belonged to Sujit, strengthening suspicions of planned involvement.
Further investigation also revealed that Kant had earlier applied to the District Magistrate and senior officials seeking a probe into the pradhan’s financial dealings.
This probe had directly led to the suspension of the pradhan’s authority.
Additionally, police disclosed that in October, the victim had filed another complaint accusing the pradhan and his relatives of assaulting him, indicating a prolonged conflict preceding the fatal attack.
Kamal Kant is survived by his wife and children, who are now seeking justice as the investigation progresses.
