Speaking at the AI Action Summit at the Grand Palais in Paris on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India is actively developing its Large Language Model (LLM). He emphasized that the country’s approach is driven by its unique diversity and collaborative public-private partnership, ensuring that Indian startups and researchers have access to critical resources at an affordable cost.

“India is building its large language model, taking into account our vast diversity. We have also created a distinctive public-private partnership model to pool resources such as computing power. This is being made available to startups and researchers at a reasonable cost,” PM Modi stated. He further reiterated India’s commitment to sharing its expertise to ensure that AI development benefits all of humanity.

Addressing concerns over the rise of artificial intelligence, PM Modi assured that machines will never surpass human intelligence or control humanity’s future.

“We are at the beginning of an AI-driven era that will significantly influence the trajectory of human civilization. While some fear that machines may one day surpass human intelligence, our shared destiny and future remain firmly in our hands. It is our responsibility to ensure that AI serves the greater good,” he remarked.

Highlighting India’s achievements in digital transformation, the Prime Minister spoke about the nation’s success in building an extensive digital public infrastructure for its 1.4 billion citizens.

“India has created an open and accessible digital infrastructure at a remarkably low cost. This framework includes regulations and a broad spectrum of applications aimed at modernizing the economy, improving governance, and enhancing the lives of our people,” he said.

PM Modi also outlined India’s commitment to leveraging data for innovation, underscoring the role of the National AI Mission in shaping the country’s AI future.

“We have harnessed the power of data through our Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture, making digital commerce more democratic and accessible. This vision forms the foundation of India’s National AI Mission,” he explained.

Reaffirming India’s leadership in AI adoption, PM Modi highlighted the country’s significant contributions during its G20 Presidency.

“During our G20 Presidency, we successfully built a consensus on using AI responsibly for the greater good. Today, India is at the forefront of AI adoption and the development of techno-legal solutions for data privacy. We are actively working on AI applications that serve public welfare. With one of the largest AI talent pools in the world, India is eager to share its knowledge and expertise to ensure that AI benefits everyone,” he concluded.
