Miscreants Flee with Valuables Worth ₹6 Lakh; No Police Action Yet Despite Complaint.

PRAYAGRAJ: In yet another shocking incident that highlights the growing audacity of criminals in Prayagraj, a woman was robbed of her jewellery-filled purse in broad daylight while traveling in an auto-rickshaw on Friday morning. The incident occurred in the Kotwali area, leaving residents shaken over the state of law and order in the city.

According to reports, three bike-borne miscreants snatched the purse from a moving auto near Gobar Gali around 4 a.m. and sped away before anyone could react.

The victim, Kiran Tripathi, was returning home with her husband, Sandeep Kumar Tripathi, a resident of Suryoday Nagar Colony, Jhunsi, who works at St. Columba’s School in the city.

The couple was returning from Jabalpur, where they had attended a family function, and had boarded an auto from Chheoki railway station to reach their home in Jhunsi.

On their way, the auto driver picked up three additional passengers from Civil Lines, and as the vehicle passed Gobar Gali, the robbers struck.

“Three men on a motorcycle came from behind and snatched the purse from my wife’s hand while the auto was still moving,” Sandeep said, visibly distraught.

“I immediately told the driver to chase them, and we followed their bike till Dhoomanganj, but they vanished into the bylanes.”

Despite calling Dial 112 and rushing to Kotwali police station to file a complaint, Sandeep alleged that the police showed little urgency. “The officers noted the incident but did not take any immediate action or send a team to the crime scene,” he claimed.

The stolen purse contained two gold rings, two mangalsutras, a pair of earrings, ₹12,000 in cash, and a new mobile phone worth ₹25,000, taking the total loss to nearly ₹6 lakh.

This raises serious questions — how did this happen in the middle of the road without anyone intervening?

Were there no bystanders who could have alerted the police or noted the bike’s number plate? Such incidents expose not only police negligence but also the public apathy that emboldens criminals.

If passersby continue to look the other way in the face of crime, the perpetrators grow fearless. Today, it happened to Kiran Tripathi — tomorrow, it could be another woman, another family, another victim of our collective silence.

The growing trend of snatch-and-run crimes in busy city areas demands immediate attention from authorities. Strong policing, community vigilance, and quick public reporting are the only ways to prevent such acts from becoming the norm.
