Fourteen trekkers lost their lives and twelve of them were injured when tempo traveller bus fell down a 250 metre gorge in the Alaknanda river basin in Uttarakhand.
The trekkers had boarded the vehicle at Delhi and were going to Uttarakhand.
The accident occured on Rishikesh Badrinath national highway in Ratauli near Rudraprayag.
According to sources a team of twenty three youngsters from UP and Delhi had boarded this bus late Friday night. There were two drivers and a helper along with 23 young trekkers. Ten trekkers had reportedly lost their lives in the spot. Two of them died at district hospital Rudraprayag and two died at AIIMS Rishikesh. The injured were being treated at the district hospital and AIIMS.
The driver reportedly fell to sleep causing the vehicle to fall in the gorge after breaking the road side support.
Four among the dead were from Uttar Pradesh. They have been identified as Smriti Sharma 28 Sonbhadra, Mohini Pandey 27 from Pratapgarh, Akansha from Jhansi and Karan Singh driver from Aligarh. Nikita Bhatt and Brajesh Bisht from Uttarakhand. Niket, Sunil Sharma, Gurukirat Singh, Smriti Tripathi and Anjali Srivastava from Gujrat and Dev from Delhi. Two other dead could not be identified immediately.
Among the injured included Vandna Sharma and Ms Shubham Singh from Noida, Mahima Tripathi and Namita Sharma from Allahabad, Aditya and Lakshya Agrawal from Mathura, Chavi from Jhansi and Dharmendra Kumar from Delhi.
PM Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah has expressed grief ove the accident.
PM has announced Rs 2 lakh ex gratia payment to families of the dead and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also announced ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the families.
