Yogi Orders FIRs for False Reports — Move Seen as Warning to Both Complainants and Erring Officials

Lucknow: During a public grievance hearing at the Gorakhnath temple complex in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued a firm directive: if any investigating authority files a false report in a case, a criminal case must be registered against the person responsible.
The instruction came after several complainants at the Janata Darshan alleged that misleading or fabricated reports had been submitted during investigations.
Taking serious note, the Chief Minister said every matter must be decided only after an impartial inquiry and warned that any deliberate delay or negligence at any stage would invite strict action.
He also directed officials to act firmly in cases of land encroachment.
In a statement, the state government said the CM emphasised that justice cannot rest on distorted facts and that accountability must follow wherever investigation is compromised.
About 150 citizens met him during the interaction, where he assured them that their concerns would be addressed within a fixed timeframe.
A broader expectation
The directive is being viewed as a step that could discourage people from falsely implicating innocent individuals through fabricated complaints.
However, many observers believe its real impact will depend on whether it is applied equally to police personnel as well.
There is a widespread perception that in some cases innocent persons get entangled in legal proceedings because of pressure, influence, or personal motives affecting investigations.
If action is taken not only against complainants but also against officers who knowingly file incorrect reports, the measure could significantly strengthen public faith in the justice system.
The announcement has therefore raised expectations that accountability will extend beyond paperwork to the conduct of investigations themselves — a move many feel would make the reform far more meaningful.
