“Zubeen Garg Was Not Meant to Return”: Assam CM’s Explosive Murder Claim Points to a Deeper Conspiracy

When a sitting Chief Minister declares a death to be murder even before a chargesheet is filed, it signals something far more sinister than an accidental tragedy.

And in the case of Zubeen Garg — Assam’s cultural icon, beloved singer, and one of the Northeast’s most adored stars — that signal has set off a political and emotional storm unlike anything the state has witnessed in years.

On Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made his most unequivocal statement yet:

“It was a murder case from the very first day.” Addressing the Assembly, he asserted that Zubeen Garg’s sudden death in Singapore on September 19, 2025, “was not accidental”, but the result of a planned elimination.

A Death That Shook Assam — And a CM’s Stunning Claim

Zubeen Garg died while swimming in Singapore, with local police earlier stating that preliminary inquiries found “no foul play”.

But Sarma dismissed this, saying the Assam CID had registered an FIR the very next day under sections related to criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and negligence.

According to him, investigators quickly concluded that this was not negligence — it was “plain and simple murder” — and within two days, they sought to add Section 103 of the BNS, which pertains to murder.

“Had we not done that immediately, all the accused would have walked free on bail,” Sarma told the House.

Who Has Been Arrested So Far?

The case has already led to seven arrests, including some from Zubeen’s inner circle:

  • Shyamkanu Mahanta — organiser of the North East Festival in Singapore
  • Siddharth Sharma
  • Amritprava Mahanta
  • Shekhar Jyoti Goswami
  • Zubeen’s manager
  • Two of his bandmates

All have been booked under murder charges, with Sarma stressing that “one killed him, and the others assisted.”

A Rare Adjournment Motion, A United Assembly

In an unprecedented move, the Assam Assembly allowed an adjournment motion on Day 1 of the winter session to discuss Zubeen’s death.

Both Opposition leaders and the Chief Minister agreed that this was essential, given how deeply the tragedy had affected the people.

“This issue is above politics. Zubeen’s murder is an irreplaceable loss,” Sarma said.

Opposition Wants Answers — Allegations Fly

While supporting the discussion, Opposition MLAs demanded:

  • A detailed government statement backing the murder claim
  • A House Committee to oversee the investigation
  • Inclusion of officials connected to the Ministry of External Affairs — especially MOS Pabitra Margherita, a close associate of Zubeen — since the Singapore festival was presented by the MEA

They also questioned the SIT’s jurisdiction in probing a foreign country’s death.

Sarma hit back hard, accusing the Opposition of “assisting the accused” and demoralising investigators.

A Controversial Exchange Over Zubeen’s Identity

The debate took a sharp turn when Sarma declared, “Zubeen was a Hindu,” prompting MLA Manoranjan Talukdar to accuse him of trying to “paint Zubeen with Hindutva.”
Fans have long insisted that Zubeen rejected caste and religious labels.

Sarma retorted that Talukdar was “hurting Hindu sentiments.”

A Case That Has Become a Political Volcano

With elections just months away, Zubeen’s death has become one of the most volatile issues in Assam. The CM’s bold declaration that this was a murder orchestrated through a deeper conspiracy has only intensified public outrage and speculation.

As Sarma put it:
“We have not come to play politics with Zubeen. We will not stop until justice is done.”

But with the chargesheet still awaited — and the state emotionally torn — the larger question lingers:

Who wanted Zubeen Garg dead, and why?
