CJP Leaders Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka Walk Free After 7 Days in Tihar Jail

The Cockroach Janta Party leaders secured release after submitting fresh undertakings against calling protests at Jantar Mantar, following repeated detentions over demonstrations at the site.

NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were released from Tihar Jail on Wednesday evening after spending a week in judicial custody in a case linked to their protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

Their release followed written assurances submitted before the court of a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM), pledging to maintain public order and refrain from mobilising demonstrations at the protest site until its legal status changes in accordance with the law.

According to the magistrate’s order, both leaders undertook to preserve peace and tranquillity. They also committed themselves to ensuring that any future demonstrations they participate in would remain within the framework of the Constitution.

The release order required Das and Ranka to furnish personal bonds and surety bonds of Rs 50,000 each, in addition to submitting their written undertakings.

The latest proceedings followed a series of confrontations with the authorities over the leaders’ presence at Jantar Mantar, which has been denotified as an authorised protest venue.

Das and Ranka had previously signed bonds promising good behaviour and the maintenance of peace for one year after their detention at Delhi airport on October 10.

However, they returned to Jantar Mantar on October 13 and waved the national flag, prompting another detention. Authorities subsequently sent them to judicial custody, citing an alleged breach of their earlier commitments.

Their detention was initially ordered for five days. On Monday, the magistrate extended the period by a further two days, bringing their total time in custody to seven days.

The extension order, signed by Special Executive Magistrate Ritu Raj, an officer of the rank of assistant commissioner of police, questioned whether the two leaders could be relied upon to comply with legal directions.

It referred to their repeated calls for demonstrations at a site that was no longer officially designated for protests.

Both leaders were brought before the magistrate at Mandir Marg police station on Wednesday, shortly before the extended period of judicial custody was due to end.

Meanwhile, their legal challenge to the custody extension took a different turn earlier in the day.

Das and Ranka withdrew their petition before the Delhi High Court after the court noted that they had allegedly violated an earlier peace bond and that another legal remedy was available to them.

The two CJP leaders had approached the High Court on Tuesday to challenge the order extending their detention. Their release came later on Wednesday after they furnished the fresh undertakings required by the magistrate.
