Akbar Allahabadi Legacy: The Judge Who Turned Satire into a Voice of Resistance

From “Hangama Hai Kyun Barpa” to Bollywood, the Urdu poet’s wit continues to challenge colonialism, cultural imitation, and social hypocrisy.
Akbar Allahabadi Legacy: The Poet Who Used Satire Against Colonial Rule
Explore the timeless legacy of Akbar Allahabadi, the celebrated Urdu poet, judge and satirist whose humour challenged colonialism, cultural imitation and social hypocrisy.

PRAYAGRAJ — Few figures in Urdu poetry embody contradiction as vividly as Syed Akbar Hussain, better known as Akbar Allahabadi.

A respected judicial officer under British rule, he simultaneously became one of its most perceptive literary critics, using humour, irony and sharp observation to question colonial influence and the changing social habits of Indians.

Remembered by the honorific “Lisan-ul-Asr” — the Voice of the Age — Akbar Allahabadi carved out a distinctive place in the Urdu literary tradition.

While celebrated poets such as Mirza Ghalib and Mir Taqi Mir explored themes of love, separation,n and human emotion, Akbar increasingly turned his attention towards the contradictions of society, political authority, colonial attitudes,s and the growing fascination with Western ways of life.

His distinctive contribution lay in making laughter a form of dissent. Rather than relying on solemn declarations, he exposed contradictions through satire, allowing a seemingly light verse to carry a pointed political and social message.

His poetry questioned the unquestioning admiration for British customs among sections of the Indian elite while expressing concern over the erosion of indigenous cultural confidence.

The irony of Akbar’s own professional life made his literary position all the more striking.

Financial difficulties interrupted his formal education at an early stage, but he continued learning independently.

He taught himself English, studied law without conventional institutional support, rt and began his working life as a clerk in the Railway Engineering Department.

Persistence eventually took him into the colonial judicial establishment.

He served as a Munsif and later rose to become a Sessions Judge before retiring from judicial service at the Allahabad High Court.

Thus, the man who represented the British-era judicial system professionally was also the poet who scrutinised the absurdities and contradictions of colonial rule in verse.

Akbar’s resistance was often expressed through memorable couplets rather than political speeches.

When censorship threatened the freedom of expression, he famously suggested that confronting cannon fire required neither a sword nor a bow, but a newspaper.

The line captured the power he attributed to journalism and the written word.

His satire also targeted Indians who, in his view, had become excessively enamoured of Western culture while looking down upon their own traditions.

Through humour, he questioned a form of cultural imitation that he believed could weaken a society’s sense of identity.

His connection with Allahabad was not merely literary.

In the city’s Chowk area, he established Ishrat Manzil, a residence named in honour of his son Ishrat.

The poet also shared a close friendship with Pandit Motilal Nehru.

According to local historical tradition cited in accounts of Akbar’s legacy, the name of Akbar’s residence influenced the Nehru family in naming their own home Anand Bhawan, a name carrying a similar association with happiness.

The old residence associated with Akbar has since acquired another identity.

It now houses Yadgar-e-Husaini Inter College in Prayagraj, while an Akbar Hall continues to serve as a reminder of the poet’s association with the place.

What makes Akbar Allahabadi particularly remarkable is that his poetry did not remain confined to literary circles.

Decades after his death, his verses continued to find new audiences through music and cinema.

His celebrated ghazal “Hangama Hai Kyun Barpa” gained widespread recognition through the rendition of Ghulam Ali.

His literary legacy also reached the world of qawwali, with his poetry appearing in Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s acclaimed “Tum Ik Gorakh Dhanda Ho.”

Cinema subsequently offered another route for his words to reach younger generations, including the 2015 Hindi film Masaan, which incorporated his poetry.

Popular culture had already introduced his name to a vast audience much earlier.

The song “Mai Hun Akbar Allahabadi, Parda Hai Parda” from Amar Akbar Anthony carried the poet’s name into mainstream Hindi cinema and helped make his identity familiar even to audiences who had never encountered his written work.

For Tanveer Zaidi, the story carries a deeply personal dimension.

Identifying himself as a member of Akbar Allahabadi’s genealogical family tree, he describes the poet’s continuing influence with a sense of pride.

He also points to poet Tauqeer Zaidi and Najeeb Allahabadi as among those contributing, in their respective ways, to keeping the family’s literary inheritance alive.

Zaidi himself has sought to extend that inheritance through several creative and educational pursuits.

An actor, author and educationist, he says his work in acting, writing and education represents his own contribution to a legacy that has travelled across generations.

Perhaps that is the most enduring feature of Akbar Allahabadi’s reputation: his poetry refuses to remain confined to the period in which it was written.

His humour, cultural observations and instinct for exposing hypocrisy continue to resonate, while lines carried through ghazal, qawwali and cinema repeatedly introduce his voice to audiences far beyond the traditional world of Urdu literature.

About the author: Tanveer Zaidi is an actor, author, and educationist. He has appeared in lead roles in more than a dozen Bollywood films and has worked in numerous television series.

He has written several fictional novels and thousands of articles on a wide range of subjects.
