RG Kar Case: Two Years On, Victim’s Family Questions Investigation and Fears Justice May Be Delayed
Frustrated by the slow-moving investigation, the victim’s family says it may approach the CBI chief again and is prepared to revive street protests if it sees no meaningful progress.
Kolkata: The family of the young doctor whose rape and murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital triggered nationwide outrage is once again questioning whether the investigation is moving towards a satisfactory conclusion.
With former hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh now granted bail in a financial irregularities case, the victim’s parents say their confidence in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has weakened considerably.
The family’s frustration stems not only from the latest court decision but also from what it describes as an absence of visible progress in the wider pursuit of accountability.
The victim’s father has indicated that the family could return to the CBI’s top leadership for answers if the next stage of the proceedings offers little reassurance.
The Supreme Court’s October 15 order allowed Ghosh to secure bail in the case involving alleged financial wrongdoing at the institution.
The decision overturned an earlier refusal by the Calcutta High Court on February 23.
During the hearing, a bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Prasanna B Varale considered the length of Ghosh’s detention and the pace of the trial.
More than two years had passed in custody, yet only seven out of 147 witnesses had been examined.
The order has caused fresh anxiety for the victim’s parents, who have spent years seeking justice through the courts.
Speaking on Sunday, the father said the latest development had strengthened his belief that Ghosh could soon leave prison, leaving the family deeply unsettled.
Beyond the question of bail, the father’s principal grievance concerns the quality and transparency of the investigation.
He alleged that the CBI’s Special Investigation Team had failed to provide convincing evidence of progress and that the family remained unclear about what the agency’s submissions to the courts had achieved.
For the parents, the submission of documents and reports is not enough. They want demonstrable action and a clearer account of how the investigation is advancing.
The father expressed frustration that, from the family’s perspective, the process has yet to produce the outcomes they had hoped to see.
He also accused investigators of paying insufficient attention to information supplied by the family.
If the next court hearing does not reveal meaningful movement, he said, the parents may seek another meeting with the CBI director to press for answers.
The prospect of Ghosh’s release has raised a separate concern. The family fears that his freedom on bail could create opportunities to influence witnesses or interfere with proceedings.
These concerns have been voiced by the parents; they are not, in themselves, proof that any such interference has occurred.
In a striking indication of the family’s loss of faith in the central agency, the father said he placed greater trust in West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
He maintained that the chief minister had offered assistance, although the investigation remained beyond his direct authority.
The father argued that a state-controlled investigation might have delivered more tangible results by now.
He said the family remained in touch with the chief minister and would continue seeking support, while acknowledging that the courts determine who conducts the probe.
The parents have not ruled out renewed demonstrations. The father said they would be willing to organise protests again if they believed that public pressure was necessary to secure justice for their daughter.
Their willingness to return to the streets reflects continuing dissatisfaction with the pace of the legal process.
Ghosh’s legal troubles began with his arrest in September 2024 over alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar.
The CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch in Kolkata had registered a first information report on August 24, 2024, and subsequently filed a chargesheet in Special Case No. 1 of 2025.
His position in the rape-murder investigation followed a different legal course.
In December 2024, a Kolkata court granted bail to Ghosh and Abhijit Mondol, the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet within 90 days.
Ghosh nevertheless remained incarcerated in the financial irregularities case until the Supreme Court granted him bail.
The latest development has therefore reopened painful questions for a family that continues to seek accountability in a case that drew widespread public attention.
The parents want investigators to demonstrate that the pursuit of justice is progressing, rather than leaving them to wait for further court dates without clear answers.
Ghosh’s bail in the financial case does not amount to a finding that he is innocent or guilty of the allegations.
The legal proceedings and the family’s demands for accountability remain separate matters, with the parents insisting that the investigation must produce credible answers.
